I recently wrapped up a complicated project with friends, mapping the impact of evolving cultural influences onto an urban revitalization initiative, and I put this striking image on our board at the very beginning to remind us to mindful of the surprisingly sexy and unanticipated ways these factors can manifest. Part of a series anchoring the branding mythology created by always brilliant London-based creative agency GBH for a Japanese restaurant in the heart of Paris (designed by Phillipe Starck, no less), the tattoos were designed by Alex ‘Kofuu’ Reinke Horikitsune, the only European to have trained as an apprentice in the traditional art of irezumi, studying for 15 years under world-reknowned grand master Horiyoshi III (photos by Uli Weber) @gbh_london #gbhbook @holyfoxtattoos #alexreinke @uliweber @starck @misskorestaurant #missko#branding#japan#paris#graphics#tattoo#tattoodesign#irezumi#horikitsune#horiyoshi3#tutto_cool

This is the ceiling in @horiyoshi_3 Isecho studio in Yokohama. We had set an adventure a few hours early to find his Isecho studio in the heart of Yokohama. We passed by an alleyway that google maps took us @jeremyboddy passed these stairs but was not sure where his studio would be. After failing asking the locals, this gentleman in a chef hat started waving us down from the street and pointed at my friends tattoos. He started laughing and probably saying it was funny watching us ask locals about a tattoo shop. He started to point us towards the stairs and that’s when we saw the statues and mini shrines. I never knew where that gentleman came from or where he went after that. We needed to thank him more. 🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♂️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼thank you to @horiyoshi_3 for letting me document this day in his studio. Came to see the master at work on a full body suit. We watched in awe as another client came to do the same. #yokohama#neighborhood#mtfuji#background#horiyoshi#artistmafia#studio#horiyoshi3#japaneseart#japanesestyle#masterartist @horiyoshi3shop #nikonglobal#nikon#35mm#bio#document#discoverjapan#brushes#vicejapan#shisei#vice
