True story; I’m really self conscious about the thickness of my hair. And no it’s not a vain thing I promise. But as a professional stylist, it’s a bit of any oxymoron. You see between whatever chronic health issues I have going on and the birth of Chloë nearly 3 years ago, I’ve lost a lot of hair. .
We all know postpartum hair loss is a legit thing. And I always heard my mommy clients come in and stress about it. But until I went through it myself I never realized how scary + worrisome it makes you. Seriously, I lost SO much hair from 2-5 Months postpartum. Like gobs and rats nests worth. I couldn’t even touch it without multiple chunks falling out (or lets me real, in Chloe’s diaper, around her tight little clenched baby fists, the floor, back of every shirt I wore...)
I knew it’d grow back. And it has. But it’s taken foreverrrrr. And to top it off, whatever health ailments I’m currently rocking, it either stunts the growth or has made the newly grown, long hair that FINALLY grew back in my temples fall out. Again. And it’s so brittle it easily breaks. .
So, if you’re ever worried or self conscious about what your hair is doing, you’re not alone. And there is always a reason behind it! I feel see deeply as a holistic hairstylist and general do gooder, to look at the whole person. What life events are you going through, what imbalances might you go to your doctor to have checked out, stress management, past chemical and color services, at home product usage, etc. .
Hair really is one of those deeply individual things that says so much about who we are as people. But rest in the knowledge that it grows back, it can be corrected and sometimes patience and a little TLC are all you need. 💕
tonight - refilling my tried & true -
lavender, rosemary, copaiba, cedarwood + peppermint, a splash of thayer’s witch hazel & water equals hair regrowth madness!
for reference, I use a 2 oz. amber glass spray bottle... always in my bathroom making me feel all kinds of taken care of 💕👌🏻 right next to my self-made face toner that’s been banishing blackheads left & right 😍🙌🏻
How to avoid oily hair?
▫️Wash your hair less often - Cleaning your hair too much can actually cause excess oil production! It happens because shampoo strips your head of natural oil, and your scalp reacts protecting itself by producing even more;
▫️Avoid hot water! The heat stimulates oil production;
▫️Condition the ends only;
▫️Touch your hair less!
👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼 For some people, oily hair is caused by hormonal issues. If you think your oiliness is caused because of hormonal disfunction, talk to your doctor. ❤️
Deep conditioners will generally contain higher percentages of oils and also have a higher viscosity. When we think of a deep conditioner, we generally imagine a conditioner that penetrates deep into the hair strands and provides lots of nourishment and moisture.
The role of a deep conditioner may indeed be to penetrate deeply into the hair but it could also have the role of providing heavy emollients onto the outer layer of the hair.
In this short clip from one of our organic haircare formulation teaching videos, you can see us create a deep conditioning treatment that even contains a small amount of wax which can be used to tame very dry hair, curls or coily hair. It is a thick nourishing balm-like product that you apply pre-wash to your hair and which you leave on for a while.
