Could be one of the toughest climbs I’ve done yet. 5734ft to that peak with the last 1384ft being straight up. As always the view at the top was well worth it. It’s a shame my legs no longer wish to be functioning members of my body.
*waiting for the caterpillar from Alice and wonderland to pop out* Such a magical little spot that Ruby directed me to during our hike yesterday- I think she was headed for the river just out of frame but I could resist getting a shot of her looking all majestic amongst these beautifully coloured mushrooms! 🍄
Throwback Thursday (it's still Thursday somewhere right?). That's me first year of Ranger training with the New Zealand Forest Service - 1985. From memory the hut is Otanetea, Te Urewera, and was in the middle of five months of wild animal surveys.
Things were very different back then - single compartment external frame canvas packs, rubber boots, no polar fleece, soft shells, quick dri, or Gortex - it was all wool, cotton, and swanndries! No technology - had to lug around a UHF radio to talk to the outside world. Got lost, slid down "slopes", fell off a few things, and had some freaky river crossings. But grew up very fast, and found my love of the great outdoors.
Love the old orange corrugated huts. I can distictively remember the smell of woodsmoke and tea, and the sound of those first footsteps on the wooden floor when you walked through the door. Very welcoming after long days in the bush.
Great times and great memories.
This boy “lawyers” me every single day. It doesn’t matter what the topic is, he will negation, argue, debate, question, and probe me often to my breaking point and I 💜 it. I love that it means he’s always thinking, wondering, questioning his potential, my potential, and what the world can offer him. He doesn’t mean to be a pain, in fact, he has a huge heart and always wants to make sure I’m not mad at him. I tell him daily that I’ll only be mad at him if he loses his inquisitive nature and stops fighting for what he wants in life. His favorite thing to do is play fight with sticks and cuddle me and plans on paying for his and my travel through a food truck that he dreams of one day 😂😎. At only nine years old, I know many things will change for him over the next decade, but I really hope he never loses his passion and zest for life. I know as parents we get caught up in our kid’s academics and sports but don’t forget to nurture the things that make your kid’s eyes sparkle, their minds dreaming, and their intentions on the forefront. When you live this on a daily basis then it’s easy for your kids to emulate your passion for life. #bewhoyouwantyourkidstobe#wildchild#dreamer#raisingboys#raisingkidsoutdoors#newzealandadventures#explorenewzealand#hikenewzealand
Who loves getting their kids outside to learn through living. Everywhere you look there's something to excite a curious mind. I'm curious, what are your favourite hikes for kids? Looking for some fresh trails to get out and explore.
So good heading out exploring the our beautiful country and being able to come back to our home away from home to freshen up and relax.
