Helihike on Franz Josef Glacier was absolutely incredible; I wouldn't have minded being stranded overnight! Shame to see it has retreated so quickly over recent years, but grateful to be able to experience it now.
Day 6 was a pretty lights-out day. We decided to do the Franz Josef Heli-Hike tour; which means we got to take a helicopter ride up onto the glacier for a couple hours. Hiking around with crampons was a new experience, and it's crazy how rugged the glacier is once you're actually up close and personal to it.
Our guide was awesome and had a ton of passion for glaciers which made it even more enjoyable! She did mention that in New Zealand, similar to the rest of the world, their glacier is retreating at an astounding rate due to climate change. It's worrisome to think that in the future, others may not have the opportunity to hike on one. So if you get the chance, definitely go for it!
