@BokTowerGardens cannot be skipped if you are in the Orlando area. Excellent children’s garden for all ages. Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. designed the gardens and the 205 foot singing tower was built in 1929 in the Gothic Revival and Art Deco style.
“I didn’t know you had a kid” a new coworker said to me, “I can see how much you love them.”
Confused, I responded back to him, “I don’t have any children…”
“Then who was that girl sassing off to you yesterday?” he replied.
Ah, I realized, “That was one of the youth who used to live at our shelter.”
One of the ones who stop by my office weekly,
to say hi, or just eat all my candy,
to tell me what I’m doing wrong with my hair, or just what I’m doing wrong in general.
When I was young, I remember my mom packing extra lunches for a pair of siblings at my school
I never knew why, but it went on for weeks.
“Bring these to them before class - don’t forget!” she’d say as she handed me the bags.
One day, annoyed with my armfuls of sack lunches, I snapped at her,
“Why do you have to make lunch for someone else’s kid?!”
“There’s no such thing as someone else’s child” she replied,
“One day you’ll realize that.”
The other day, one of the youth came by my office to show me a school project –
A family tree.
Photos of people in the shape of a towering redwood.
Faces of foster siblings, bio siblings, someone she calls “auntie”, a best friend...
And at the bottom
Carefully cutout and pasted to the trunk
Was a picture of me.
That’s when I remembered –
the extra lunch bags with 2 other kids’ names circled in hearts, just like mine alway was,
And my response to my coworker a couple weeks back...
You see –
I was wrong.
I DO actually have children.
In fact, I have hundreds of them.
And if you think I love my dogs,
You should see how much I love

As time goes by, I’m more and more aware that mountain biking gives a direction and purpose to our travels and that if we weren’t into a specific outdoor activity, we might feel like we have *done* the US. It’s the fourth winter we spend mostly in Arizona and we still haven’t explored half the trails that it has to offer.
We love rock climbing too, but it’s more of a whole day affair with the 5 of us and to be completely honest, it has been never racking to climb with older girls who lead and build/clean anchors. If you’ve never climbed, you might not know that building and cleaning anchors involves a series of steps committed to memory. So when your teenager that systematically leaves the milk on the countertop after eating cereals and that still cannot safely cross the street because she is in a world of her own starts building and cleaning anchors, you get pretty nervous. So nervous that you might end up looking less for climbing spots and more for bike spots.
Mind you, mountain biking is not without its risk, but an accident is rarely fatal. I miss climbing and we still will keep on climbing recreationally for sure, but our girls needed to delve deeper into a sport and push their limits. And I’d rather it is though mountain biking for now.
