Stun gun voltage is controlled by the distance between the stunning prongs, not a number on a box. The distance between prongs on most stun guns is between an 1/8 to 3/8 of an inch. This short distance means the arc formed is limited to between 10,000 to 25,000 volts. Once an arc is made, the voltage discharges to the other prong creating sparks and the familiar zapping noise. An 80,000,000 volt stun gun would require a prong gap distance of 8 feet!
What actually Happens to the Body When Stunned
Stun guns disrupt muscle activity by disrupting nervous cell activity and sending random signals to the surrounding muscle groups. Contact from the stun gun to the muscles is generated by creating a path through the body that is easier for the electricity to flow through than the air gap between the prongs. This is what causes the muscles to involuntarily contract.
Although environmental conditions and individual bodies vary considerably, the electrical current (measured in Amperes) is a measurement of how much electrical disruption there is and can be an indicator of pain.
