Your movement practice deserves to be taken seriously. Your training should be focused around how to make your movement stronger, more fluid, more efficient. Have you ever thought about the degree of nervous system enhancement your training can provide? How is your neural programming? Are you developing your central mapping? Is your coordination being enhanced?

Your strength training should have purpose, not just strength for the sake of strength. Your mobility shouldn’t be mobility for the sake of mobility - and what is mobility anyway? Everyone works on their mobility, but is that what they are actually doing? Or just some stretching and rolling around on a lacrosse ball? Isn’t mobility just a descriptive term for how well you can achieve any given position with ease and efficiency? The combination of the demand and the ability of your physiology and neurology to accept or decline the task at hand? Your mobility is predicated on your nervous system ability to allow or prevent you from achieving a movement. Sure, there might be physiological changes over time due to adaptations but ultimately there is a hierarchy that needs to be understood and respected and muscles and fascia are at the bottom of that hierarchy.

One of the early progressions we use for any speed or power development is to learn how to “stick” a landing. This puts the athlete in a controlled environment to learn proper mechanics. This allows them to progress to more demanding drills and game like scenarios in the future.

A few things to think about...1️⃣ Start slow, the further you jump away from the hoops the more challenging the drill gets. 2️⃣ Keep hips low (in football, we used to call this keeping your pad level low). Traditionally young athletes play high which can result in a higher incidence of injury. 3️⃣ Be conscious of excessive valgus (knee rolling inward). Good LORD today was rough in the gym. Couldn’t even get 6 reps with those weighted pull ups even with bad form. But, like I said, these are the days you have to push through even more than the others.
Something that I haven’t mentioned yet is why I wear sleeveless shirts. Obviously I like to see and show off the #gainz, but when you are just starting to hit the gym it helps IMMENSELY to be able to see the muscles you are working, no matter how small they are. To be able to see what’s going on under your skin helps a ton with that mind-muscle connection. It’s like you’re willing your muscles to grow by staring at them.

Something inside me awakened today. Putting in 15 more hours to my training regiment these past two weeks to work on bulletproofing my hip for the season I started to second guess myself and asking myself is it worth all of this time? The rehab and workouts through me into a baby funk last couple days when quads were throbbing into the wee hours of the night. Today I was about to cancel my planned workout but then I decided to do it. Here is why. "Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up". The workout today was brutal and I did it alone. I wanted to quit but I didn't. I didn't think I would be able to hit certain splits and I did it. 30 burpees, 900mrun, 600m bucket carry, 600mrun, 300m 120lb drag, 600m run x 4. Stayed at 6 flat pace and hip felt better than it has in a long time. Running form is getting stronger. Minamlist shoes the whole workout. 
Post workout I had multiple people come up to me but one comment struck me "you are a beast" she said. I laughed it off and said thanks. Then she turned and said "No you are.""At that moment I realized I was. I could do anything I wanted to and set my mind too. I did it. It took crazy. Another hard day on the van isolating a steering issue,  turned out to be damaged ball joints on the side that took the hit.  We still need a new steering gear box and tie rods, but this was an important step in getting the van back to tip top shape. .

First time going no hands in a flow which includes the shoulder stand, at the end of a rough week where I've beaten myself up for no real reason. We've all been there.

Pleased to say I've got an achievement unlocked, only made possible through stillness and awareness about what is going on in the present moment, as opposed to identification and obsession on the perfect form in my head. Though it is a valid goal (so many things I can make prettier), presence in the moment is essential for progress (it's ok to suck sometimes!). And I guess that applies to everything else too. 🙂

Part 2: Improving Thoracic Extension with the Sotts press✌🏻 Following on from the previous warmup exercise, the Sotts press is an amazing movement that gets your erector spine muscles firing and improves thoracic extension! Not only does good thoracic mobility lead to a better positioning in the bottom of the squat and with weight overhead, BUT also can improve back pain and stiffness, reduce strain on the neck and allow full range of movement!

Start with a dowel or broomstick in the base of a squat and press out!Ensure control, balance and full range before progressing in weight! Practice makes perfect 💪🏻 *This exercise originally is performed in the front rack position but for overhead squat/snatch practice, it can be performed from the back rack.
