Day 1 of eating nothing but wild food!
Thirst quenched from this fresh waterfall before spending the day on the coastal rocks eating all of the wild edibles I could find. First I found Mallow which was a delicious velvety sweet snack perfect for that little boost before a long day of foraging. Next was Sea Beet, a strong and meaty green that I only needed a few leaves of. Of course there was Limpets for protein but the main attraction was seaweed. Pepper Dulse with its deep red color swooped me off my feet with its mildly spicy, beef jerkey taste. By munching on these powerhouses of nutrition as I forage them I am immediately being restored with twice as much goodness that I have spent. FINALLY OUT OF HIBERNATION BABY! (Top left pic of waterfall, top right pic of Sea Beet, bottom left pic of Pepper Dulse, bottom right photo shows the mallow stems and flowers of three cornered leek). I also had Sea Purslane for breakfast, a nice salty snack, as well as Wild Cabbage. With @foragefrolics
I love this #bee tool! It shows the #forage range three miles around your #hive .
Just pop your address into our #map , and you can investigate the likely forage sites your bees will seek out.

True life: yesterday I ate a can of sardines for breakfast, in my car on my way to work. 😐 Don’t worry I brushed by teeth as soon as I got there! But I can’t stress enough how much better I can focus at work and feel good throughout the day when I have a highly nutritious breakfast. Eating fish in the morning is one of my favorite ways to be sure I’m getting a good amount of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, EPA & DHA. Those little suckers are literal brain food!! And if you think it sounds gross because we’ve been trained to think sardines are “icky”, I suggest you give them another try. .
One way to eat them that most people truly enjoy is on top of a cream cheese bagel with lots of fresh herbs. Today I’m enjoying a piece of @againstthegraingourmet baguette with organic cream cheese, smoked black pepper salmon, topped with ground cress and carrot tops from our yard. Perfect dues for the most beautiful day today!!

I finally got to see how cochineal was grown!! Cochineal is a tiny red bug that is grown off of the nopal cactus and makes a deep red color. It can be used as a fabric dye, a paint and is even used in US in the food dye #4 . The white spots are the bugs in their cocoons.
Corn Salad, (Lamb’s Lettuce, Mache, field salad) This lettuce is amazing! Looks like baby spinach, Corn Salad was originally foraged by European peasants! Dependable in even the harsh summer environment of the south. I started this in my backyard and it’s thrived easily ‘I give it shade’. This pic shows it wants to grow even through our harsh winter months. More comes back every year as I allow some to flower. Three times as much vitamin C as lettuce! Has also B6, iron, and potassium! If you’re not in the environment to forage this, go to wherever you get your seeds and get this planted in your yard!
Early spring gifts us one of the super-lowest tides of the entire year... and in my world that only means one thing... *time to go spooting!!*
Spoots or razorclams are a delicious shellfish that lives burrowed in the sand along many of our UK shores, however the typical tidal range doesn't usually uncover the razor beds. A few precious times a year the tides are super-low, allowing us rare access to the razorbeds on foot! I like that you can't get there all the time, it helps with sustainability for the spoot colonies. I usually find cockles & other clams when I go too.
The plan for the day involves arriving at one location to ID & collect sea veggies & tasty coastal plants to enjoy with our clams, then off to a suitable spooting shore to learn how to find & collect these beautiful shellfish. We'll then have an evening cook-up on the beach & enjoy our catch together, as fresh as can be! You will need your own transport ideally as we're going to 2 places, but do chat to me if that's a problem
Low tide is just before sunset which is why this is an afternoon into evening course :) And please note we will be eating seafood!

I once babysat a friend’s young daughter (3y) and took her to the park. I saw her run over, kneel down and whisper at the snowdrops. When I asked her what she was saying, she looked up and sang: 🎼
Little drops of snow,
What do you do when the cold winds blow?
Ring a little bell and say:
Cold winds, cold winds go away!'
I always think of this sweet scene when I see the first #snowdrops of #Spring !

Spring has sprung down at the r'Cif market in Fez. Just look at these beauties. Plump pink radishes, and my seasonal favourite, bakoula (mallow in English), which is foraged locally and turned into a steamed salad flavoured cumin and harissa by my housekeeper Rachida. #spring , #feast , #flavour , #seasonal , #fez , #markets , #forage , #secretsofthemedina
