Hello lovelies! I am so very excited to start up this account and welcome you here to this new chapter with me!
Since I joined instagram five years ago, my knit life has been limited solely to my private account. As a result, for quite some time I have felt constrained and unable to really grow and broaden out more inclusively within the fiber community. I have turned away many follow requests over the years simply because my family is the focus of my private account, and I'm very particular about their online privacy. I honestly don't know why I didn't think to do this sooner!
A little about me: I live in the greater Vancouver area, and absolutely adore the pool of amazing local talent and vendors we have here in our fiber community. I took up knitting before the birth of my second child about nine years ago to make nursery knits and I haven't looked back since. I am Icelandic Canadian and *slightly* obsessed with Icelandic sheep, the qualities of lopi, and all Icelandic knits. I almost always have a lopapeysa on the needles and in fact, they will always remain my prime knit obsession. ❤
The explanation behind the name Survival Knits is that I live with chronic depression and anxiety, as well as an inner ear disorder, all of which have really been very challenging to cope with over the years. Knitting has been what has enabled me to keep going, to cope, and to keep moving forward. In a very succinct way, I could say I owe knitting my life.
If you are a fiber friend and follower from my old account (@vikingsweetheart), I hope you will enjoy this more knit focused account. And if you are new, welcome here- I'm so happy to meet you 💖
Regrann from @portquoelio - ➰ I’ve heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason ➰ STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING! Go check out one of my best fiber friends right now! @moontowerdyeworks’ shop has just opened up. I am beyond excited for the world at large to get ahold of her gorgeous yarns. Anna puts so much heart and love into every skein, and it shows. Also, don’t wait to pick up a skein or two! The shop has already sold a third of its stock in only a couple hours! The skein in the photo made me tear up when I saw it. The colorway is “Stark Purple” and is my namesake. It’s the official MTD colorway of QUOE and there is only one skein left so get it while it’s available!

...while we’re on the subject of #spinning and #fiber - and #handmades for that matter...I am finding such quiet, thrilling moments taking stock of what I have. More than just the gratitude to be surrounded by texture and color of all kinds. More than just the novelty of the next new thing to touch my needles or spindle. It’s the feeling of always being ✨close✨ to people who are physically far away. This fiber was lovingly re-homed to me by @ninja.chickens from North Carolina, who has shown me the beauty of #soulfulstash . I’m sharing it with @remembrancespottery in Ontario, who lit my #handspun fire this past Christmas. I’m weighing it using the bowl that @celticcaston’s Da made; the perfect surprise present from her - a lover of a good yellow, and now a “friend in real life”. These women are a part of my day. They are guardians on my journey. ✨Surrounded✨ I tell you. Feels pretty spectacular.

Social media has plenty of silly hang ups but one things I will always love it for is connecting me with other creatives. It kind of amazes me really. I mean, How else would a weaver on Vancouver Island and a weaver in Brooklyn be able to connect so easily?
I did a patch swap with Karen of @nestsupply last week and now I’ve got a snazzy, ✨BEAUTIFULLY MADE✨ (seriously, her weaving is so delicate, clean & skilled) new patch to decorate my backpack. and even better, a new friend ✌🏼
Have yarn, will frolic! Check out this #handspun#handdyed hat project on EP 47 of the Hey BrownBerry Podcast. I sort of gush about it (and @woollywormhead). Channel link in my profile. ➿➿ Thanks to my 🇨🇦#FiberFriends @ramonafirehorse and @remembrancespottery for the other lovely bits in this photo.
I'm gonna kill two birds with one stone on this post.
Let me start off by saying a huge THANK YOU to sweet Melanie @mypickledish for my amazing #sendalittleloveswap2018 goodies. The GORGEOUS mini quilt she sent me (my first, ever!) is looking right at home on my #makerwall 😍 (Tap for maker tags) The candy you sent is already gone, my husband has a weakness for gummies. Lol Thank you so much for everything Melanie, I am so very happy you were my partner! 💙
As for the #yarnlovechallenge posts, I've already missed 3 so I'm just gonna jump right back in on today's topic... Day 13: Publication
That little copy of #vogueknitting
Andie McDowell edition circa 1986 was gifted to me by my sweet friend Meagan @meaganalessio a little while ago. It's got some pretty cool patterns in it I plan to knit someday. Also, young Andie, I mean come on! #yarnlovechallengefeb#andiemacdowelltheknittingmodel#myhappyplace#miniquilt#allthehearts#makersgonnamake#fiberfriends
Sometimes if you're a city girl like me I think we forget where our yarn and fiber comes from before it magically appears on store shelves and online shops. It comes from farmers and shepherds like Dawn and Paul Brown who lovingly raise beautiful angora goats and rambouillet sheep in Independence, Texas. (Angora goats are where mohair comes from #themoreyouknow ). Dawn has graciously invited our Houston Fiber Folk group out for a mill tour this month and I am so excited to share more with you guys about their farm and fiber mill.⠀
If you are in Texas and interested in joining in contact me for more info, if you would like to learn more about this amazing farm and their beautiful yarn and fiber please check them out at @independencefibermill AND (best part) if you want to follow along and see cute pictures of goats watch my Stories next Saturday during the tour and I will be sharing all the adorable little goat faces I see 😜🐐🐑 #yarnmadeintexas#makeitwithmohair#supportyourfibercommunity ⠀
I just received the most wonderful gift from my friend Lara. Squishy soft fiber, a sweet little pouch, a notepad and fun stitch markers. Oh, and see those two Harry Potter markers, I just found out she made those ... how awesome is that !!! Thank you so much sweet friend, you truly brightened my day and gave me a big smile 😘. #fiberfriends#knittingfriends
