Maneki Neko (Japanese translation: Beckoning Cat) figures are common within Japanese and Chinese cultures. They are sometimes referred to as “lucky cats” in America. Maneki Neko’s come in various forms but are commonly seen in Japanese or Chinese shops or restaurants as small statues. They are seen as talismans and are thought to bring good luck. It is widely accepted that the Maneki Neko originated in Tokyo (then called Edo). Many folk tales surround its origins but one of the more popular stories says that there was once a man who took shelter from a rainstorm under a large tree. In the distance there was a temple. In the temple there was a cat that seemed to be beckoning the man to come over with its paw. The man went over to the temple and when he got there the tree that he just left was struck by lightning and exploded. The cat had saved the man’s life. Thus the Maneki Neko legend was born. Different variations of the Maneki Neko will mean different things. For example the color of the cat, which paw is raised, and what the cat is holding all mean different things. Here I have painted two of Japan’s most popular cartoon cat characters as Maneki Neko’s. Having their right paws raised is symbolic of attracting good fortune and wealth. The crystal ball is representative of wisdom and the fish (carp) symbolizes abundance and good fortune. “Lucky Cats” done with acrylic paints on poster board 8.5”x11”. #manekineko#luckycat#talisman#charm#luck#japanese#chinese#fortune#amulet#cat#meowth#hellokitty#anime#cartoon#feline#painting#drawing#popart#urbanart#art#artist#pink#crystalball#lovecats#instacat#acrylicpaint#cartoonart#originalart#fanart#contemporaryart
