Sleeping in our own bed never felt so good. Missing the surf, sand, and sun, but also loved coming home to a winter wonderland! Returning from vacay to our beautiful state makes it so much easier. Now- playing catch up on laundry and loads of work! Thanks for letting me take a much needed break from social media & digital life🙌🏼

I'm trying to get back into the habit of sketching in order to strengthen the skills I reach for when I paint. I've really liked a few of my recent paintings, but feel like the quality of my painting on any given day can be hit or miss, so I'm hoping to up my consistency. (Probably also means I need to get into the studio more frequently! 🙈).

A cutie little no sugar cake - recipe from @detoxinista 👌 with simple whipped coconut cream for sweet Silas on his first birthday. It was such a joy to make! And this snack cake with no sugar actually tasted pretty great! Check out @rosyalexander for more photos and inspiration from this special day! ✨✨
Today I learned the South African phrase “Sawubona.” Translated it means: I see you, and by seeing you, I bring you into being.
Being truly seen is a profound experience
So often we look away when we see someone in need or in pain. It’s hard to meet them on that level. I even think to times I’ve dropped money in a homeless person’s bucket but did I actually look them in the eyes? No. I did not.
Well now my eyes are wide open. I see you. Sawubona.
Currently dreaming of a hot soak in this carrara-surrounded soaking tub stunner.
Our heat and hot water are currently out in our building...it should return soon and I can’t wait for a hot shower but in the meantime I’ll just be dreaming of all the beautiful tubs in my clients homes!
Tulips are truly one of the most elegant and historic flowers! I love their curvaceous fluted shape, their rich colours and the juxtaposition of their fragile petals alongside being a hardy perennial plant that comes back year after year.
Finally organized my jewelry and bead tools yesterday, and so glad that I did! Something about tidy shelves and bins makes me that much more productive. 🙌🏻 (Of course, my work table is another story - it needs to be a mess in order for me to find stuff. It's weird.)
I find that letting them go wild in one cupboard keeps them out of the others. The tupperware one is all hers and it's emptied daily. Meanwhile her own Ikea kitchen remains untouched in the corner. Sound familiar?
Being left-handed means I work “backwards” starting on the right, moving slowly left until it’s time to break, or rotate a painting for a fresh perspective. Then, I begin the process again. These are first layers of line work, and I love studying how their definition brings out the hidden beauty of the muted and softer shapes that came first. Watching shapes I didn’t even know I created be brought to life with a few simple strokes. I hope that wherever this painting spends time, viewers are drawn into a visual metaphor. I pray they gain fresh appreciation for the coexistence of mystery and substance in the raw beauty of life...because that is what this series is teaching me.
I am learning to appreciate this uncomfortable muted stage for my florals these days. The transformation when the line work is finished - it’s like magic. I look forward to it so much. But building these layers, creating a composition I am happy with, listening for when each piece says it’s time to make the move to linear work - it’s just as significant. I feel that the weirdness of my mind is uniquely evident in these pieces - I begin with content, with shading, with texture, with loose pools of color. The actual structure, the forms... the definition of what is actually before me - that comes close to the end. It’s like I’m working in reverse of what “normal” is. I will have some finished photos of this series posted soon - I have about a half dozen that haven’t been revealed yet - ranging from 24x36 down to 6x6.
A whole week of celebration and appreciation kicks off with my biggest sale of the year - 20% OFF all original botanical paintings on my site with the code “WINTERFLORAL” ❄️🌸🍃❄️
I make art because I must, but I am always so grateful when a piece speaks to someone and they choose to add it to their personal collection. Your purchases here and in the amazing galleries I am privileged to work with enable me to sustain and grow this endeavor in small steps each year. When I think about what I wrote down as dreams over a decade ago - it brings tears to my eyes you guys. Dreams coming undone, reshaped, and reality - one step at a time.
