Today I took my daughter to this STEM/tech event for girls. It was over five hours of talks and hands-on activities for girls aged about 10-16, which, as many of you know, aren’t the easiest years to be a girl. The event began with a close-up helicopter landing - a helicopter piloted, of course, by women - and I have to say, when the pilots got out and all the girls cheered and prepared to walk back inside to explore the plethora of booths representing various innovative science and technology fields, I got a bit teary-eyed. My daughter will come of age in a much different world than I did. For all the truly horrid things going on now, some things have changed measurably for the better. When I was a kid this kind of event wouldn’t have happened for girls - and I’m not really that old!
I mean, I am a bit old, but not THAT old. Although, we eventually got a chance to sit in the helicopter, and we were told it was the very helicopter a one Justin Timberlake rode in to the recent Super Bowl. The ten-year-old girls I was with were kind of like, “ew, why would we want to sit where that old guy sat.” And he was born the same year as me.
But anyway, these points remain: a couple small things have changed for the better, and I’m not really that old yet.
