In the last part (15); we talked about how runway slope could affect the takeoff performance and specifically we talked about the upslope. Today let's continue with the the effect of downslope. When the airplane is on a downslope (swipe left); the weight component now acts in the direction of thrust, this adds to the forward force, therefore it will increase the acceleration. (Swipe left)👉 as a result the increasing acceleration will eventually decrease the takeoff distance. As a rule; for every 1% slope; the takeoff distance is affected by 5% or by a factor of 1.05. We've learnt in previous parts about many factors that affect the takeoff performance namely 1️⃣The aircraft's mass, 2️⃣The air density and 3️⃣The wind factor. Our topic today will discuss an important factor which is the RUNWAY SLOPE. Slope has an impact on the takeoff distance because of its effect on how the component of weight acts along the longitudinal axis of the aircraft. In the last part; we talked about the headwind and how they affect the takeoff performance of the aircraft by increasing the airflow over the wings and thus decreasing the takeoff distance. Today let's give you an idea about the TAILWIND. A tailwind will increase your ground speed for any given indicated airspeed because in order to get the air to flow rearwards across the wing; the aircraft must first match the speed of the wind and then move considerably faster than the wind in order to ensure enough lift is generated by the wing. So accelerating to this higher ground speed will increase the takeoff distance (third photo). The additional effect the wind will have is on the angle of initial climb. Headwinds will tend to both increase the angle of initial climb and reduce the takeoff distance. Tailwinds will both reduce the angle of initial climb and increase the takeoff distance. In a case of headwind then; the aircraft is already closer to its flying speed and need not to travel as fast over the surface to achieve the necessary flow of air over the wing in order to fly. After we've discussed the factors that affect the takeoff performance and mentioned: Mass, Thrust, Aerodynamic Drag, and Wheel Drag; all of which can affect the acceleration which in turn will affect the distance needed to lift off the aircraft, the factor that I'm gonna talk about today is the AIR DENSITY. It has three effects: The first one is that the reduced density means that there's less weight of oxygen available for combustion within the engine, there's also less mass. As a result of less combustion and less mass; the thrust produced by the engines is reduced. Getting back to our formula (swipe left); reduced thrust will reduce the acceleration force and as a result (formula); the takeoff distance will be increased. The second effect of reduced density is that it can affect the takeoff speed👉In order to generate a sufficient lift; a massive air needs to flow over the airplane wing. So if the air density is reduced; then that mass of air is reduced in any given volume. Thus, to generate sufficient lift; the remaining mass must flow faster over the wing. This is achieved by accelerating the airplane to a higher speed. To gain this higher speed; the airplane will have to travel a greater distance; therefore with the reduction in density; the takeoff distance will increase.  That's it for today. Stay tuned. I talked in the last post about the mass and wheel drag and how they affect the takeoff distance (the heavier the aircraft, the high wheel drag produced, which means less acceleration and eventually more distance required for takeoff🛫). In addition to that, a heavier aircraft will require MORE LIFT to get airborne. To get this extra lift needed; the aircraft will need to travel faster through the air, this means that the aircraft will need to accelerate to a higher takeoff speed before it can get airborne. Getting to this high speed will require a greater distance and therefore the takeoff distance will increase (swipe left and look at the formula). The fourth effect is that a higher mass will reduce the aircraft's initial CLIMB ANGLE, this decreased climb angle will increase the distance required to reach the Screen Height and therefore will again increase the takeoff distance. As a result; you might have noticed before that an Airbus A380 climbs initially in a low climb angle and that's because of its high mass. 🚨SUMMARY🚨The effect of increasing mass has four detrimental effects on takeoff performance, so we have to always ensure that the aircraft's mass is within the performance limitations. In part 8 of the series, I explained the factors that affect the distance required for takeoff, and i provided a specific formula for it (swipe left). Today let's dive into some details. The first of the factors that affect the takeoff is the effect of mass (m). Increasing mass has four significant effects on the takeoff all of which can be observed in the formula for the takeoff distance. The first is that the greater amount of mass (m) for a given applied force will reduce the acceleration (a) that the airplane can achieve. Essentially; the heavier the object the harder it is to accelerate. If the acceleration (a) of the aircraft is reduced; then the distance required for it to reach a specific speed (S) will increase (the takeoff distance). With increasing mass (m); there will be more load on the wheels and therefore wheel drag (W-L) will increase (swipe left👉). An increase in drag will of course reduce the acceleration (a) of the aircraft, and once again; if the acceleration (a) of the aircraft is reduced then the distance required for it to reach a specified speed (S) will increase (takeoff distance).. Let's start with today's article. In part 3 of this series; i talked about the forces that have an effect on the aircraft during takeoff. I mentioned: 1️⃣Weight, 2️⃣Lift, 3️⃣Thrust, and today I would like to talk about 4️⃣Drag. As the airplane accelerates down the runway; it will encounter several forms of resistance called: DRAG. Resistance from the air is called Aerodynamic Drag and the resistance from the wheels and runway is called Wheel Drag (swipe left). Let's deal with an Aerodynamic Drag first. An Aerodynamic Drag has two forms: 🅰️Parasite Drag, and 🅱️Induced Drag. During the takeoff; the only form of aerodynamic drag trying to concern us is the Parasite Drag. Parasite Drag is created by the impact of the airplane on the air. It follows then that as the airplane travels faster through the air; Parasite Drag and thus the Aerodynamic Drag increases, therefore during the takeoff; Aerodynamic Drag is increasing. Wheel Drag is basically the friction between the wheel and the runway. It's a function of their friction of coefficient and the load placed on the wheel. As an example of this, press your finger lightly on the desk and push your finger forward; you will notice a resistance to the motion of your finger which would increased if you push harder on your finger. In the last article we talked about the INTAKE MOMENTUM DRAG and how this drag would decrease the thrust of the aircraft with gaining a speed. When the aircraft reaches speeds in excess of 0.2Mach; then the air ahead of the engine starts to compress; increasing the air density and therefore increasing the total mass of air flowing through the engine, as a result; this helps to limit the loss of thrust caused by INTAKE MOMENTUM DRAG. This thrust recovery is called: RAM RECOVERY or RAM EFFECT. So initially as speed increases; thrust will fall, but above 0.2Mach; the thrust loss starts to reduce due to the RAM EFFECT (swipe left and look at the figure).

Please check my previous posts to constitute a full image of the topic. In the previous post i told you about the effect of an air mass and acceleration on the thrust force generated and i told you that the principle is represented by the formula: Mass(m)*Acceleration(a)=F(thrust). Simply you can see that there's a directly proportional relationship between the mass of the air and it's acceleration and the force (thrust) produced. So the greater the mass of air; the greater the thrust produced. However; as the aeroplane travels faster; the velocity of the air entering the engine starts to match the velocity of the air exiting the engine. The result of this; is that the air is not being accelerated as much, and thus less thrust is produced. So as the airplane speed increases; the thrust produced by the jet engine decreases. This loss of thrust with increasing forward speed is referred to as INTAKE MOMENTUM DRAG.. Next time will explain how to compensate for this lost thrust. Thank you🌹

Simply you can see that there's a directly proportional relationship between the mass of the air and it's acceleration and the force (thrust) produced. So the greater the mass of air; the greater the thrust produced. However; as the aeroplane travels faster; the velocity of the air entering the engine starts to match the velocity of the air exiting the engine. The result of this; is that the air is not being accelerated as much, and thus less thrust is produced. So as the airplane speed increases; the thrust produced by the jet engine decreases. This loss of thrust with increasing forward speed is referred to as INTAKE MOMENTUM DRAG.. Next time will explain how to compensate for this lost thrust. To better understand the takeoff 🛫 performance; we need to fully grasp the forces acting upon an aircraft and how these forces might change throughout the takeoff 🛫. In the first photo shown above is an airplane at rest at the brake release point(BRP). Let's take a Boeing 737-400 series as an example. It has a maximum all up mass of 68k kilograms. This mass will be accelerated from the center of gravity of the aircraft towards the center of the earth by means of gravity. So the resulting downward force is called weight (second photo). The objective of the takeoff 🛫 procedure is to create a sufficiently high enough force to oppose this weight and allow the aircraft to fly. The principal force which is used to oppose weight is called lift (third photo). In simple terms; to generate a lift force; we need a mass of air to pass over an airfoil which are wings in our case. To make the air flows over the wings (fourth photo); the aircraft must be pushed through the air. The faster the aircraft travels through the air; the more lift will be created. The takeoff 🛫 can be divided into two parts: 1️⃣The ground run and, 2️⃣The airborne section. The ground run is usually referred to as the Takeoff Roll Required (TORR) or the takeoff run required which is the distance traveled from the brake release to the liftoff. The second part of the takeoff 🛫 which is the airborne section is commonly referred to as the initial climb. It's the distance covered from the liftoff until the aircraft reaches the screen height. The combined length of the takeoff-run required and the initial climb is known as the Takeoff Distance Required (TODR). Pilots need to make sure that the TODR does not exceed the available distance at the aerodrome to be used. This can be achieved by checking those factors which affect the takeoff distance and ensuring that the performance achieved will still enable us to perform the takeoff 🛫 safely within the constraints of the airfield. Hello ladies and gentlemen.. Today I would like to talk briefly about the takeoff phase of the flight and the performance related stuff during this phase, so let's get started 😜👉.. The takeoff 🛫stage of the flight is defined as being from brake release until the aircraft reaches a specified height called: SCREEN HEIGHT.. The Screen Height varies depending on the aircraft's classification from 35 to 50 feet. As the aircraft accelerates down the runway; a speed will be reached where the pilot applies back pressure on the control column to raise the nosewheel off the ground. This procedure is called ROTATION and it's initiated at an indicated airspeed called Vr. After that; from rotation the airplane; pitch attitude will increase and eventually the main wheels will lift off the runway. The speed at which they do so is called: VLof. After this point; the aircraft starts its initial climb and eventually will reach the Screen Height. As a preparation for landing, we have to arm (put on standby) the ground spoilers so as soon as we touchdown the ground and the main landing gear getting compressed, they'll be activated as shown in the photo above in order to decelerate the aircraft.. The yellow circle in the photo above shows how the indication appears in the cockpit of an Airbus A320 family aircrafts.. Ground spoilers are also armed before commencing the takeoff roll in order to stop the aircraft in case of rejected takeoff..

After touching down of an aircraft at your destination airport; you might've heard a very loud noise and absolutely have felt a deceleration; this is all generated by a Reverse Thrust.. Reverse Thrust, is the temporary diversion of an aircraft engine's thrust so that it is directed forward, rather than backward. Reverse Thrust acts against the forward travel of the aircraft, providing deceleration. Reverse Thrust systems are featured on many jet aircraft to help slow down just after touch-down, reducing wear on the brakes and enabling shorter landing distances.

You might reasonably ask: why would different flights, departing from and arriving to the same airport take different amounts of time? The total amount of time a flight takes — from pushing back from the departure gate (“off-blocks”), to arriving at the destination gate (“on-blocks”) — is called “block time”, and airline block times vary for the same routes. Block time includes the time to taxi-out to the runway, the actual flight duration and the time to taxi to the arrival gate, but the published schedule for the flight doesn’t break these elements apart..

As we've already entered the winter season, the chances of freezing conditions are increasing, so all the precautions must be taken to avoid the precipitation of ice crystals over the important parts of aircrafts such as wings and engines.. For that reason, Jordanian Authorities have published a NOTAM describing the type of de-icing materials to be used and the location for applying it.. KILFROST ABC-S PLUS is a type 4 anti-icing fluid recommended by the authorities as you can see from the NOTAM (second photo red rectangle).. ABC-S Plus provides maximum holdover against freezing precipitation and snow. It is particularly useful at airports that experience severe weather conditions and/or long taxi times. The product is used to protect against the build-up of frost, ice and snow. On an airplane, the electrical system produces, controls and distributes power to all the other systems that need it ➡️ flight deck displays, flight controls, in-flight entertainment and more. It’s much like the electrical system in your house, which carries electricity throughout the rooms to power your lights, television and so forth.
Unlike your house, though, the airplane generates electricity as it flies. Airplanes don’t fly on battery power. Generators on the engines make power in flight.. On a traditional airplane, power is extracted from the engines in two ways to power other airplane systems:
