Unagiya Hirokawa is a one-Michelin star restaurant in Arashimaya, Kyoto and its eel dishes are considered among the top 3 in Kyoto.
We queued for an hour, most of it outside the restaurant on a cold and windy 4 C day after walking the bamboo grove. My fingers were frozen and my legs were like lead, and when the eel donburi came (¥3,900 for a medium set, pricier than most eel restos), all the pain and aches went away. Hirokawa’s freshwater eel was extremely fine, fluffy and had no hint of earthy flavour, truly the best eel we have ever eaten. We ate every drop, every grain of rice and every sliver of eel, because we couldn’t order more even if we wanted to—the waitress took our order when we were queuing and emphasised that orders were final, no more unagi orders taken once we were seated.
Affordable food find in the CBD - Grilled iberico pork collar don for only $10! The pork collar was grilled sans much seasoning, because a myraid of different sauces and condiments were provided at each table. This way, we could flavour the meat to our preference. The amount of meat was quite generous, and was worth it for the price.
Dinin' at @onnkidonburi 🍣🍚 was filling and tasty! Raw salmon taste was balanced by the acid in the onions underneath, soy sauce; and fresh textures like cucumber and deep fried crunchy bits. Hella yum😋
