Inside Kazan Ramen Bistro, the new #Tennyson Street restaurant with its own ramen style:

The ever-growing and changing Tennyson Street got itself a ramen option, imported from Osaka, just in time for the cold weather.

The funky, glass-fronted space that for six years housed Axios Estiatorio has a sleek new look and steam in the air as Kazan Ramen Bistro.

Diamond Cabaret strip club says it’s the ‘cherry on top’ of downtown Denver

The #DiamondCabaret is a downtown goer’s best friend, according to the owner of the #Denver strip club. “We’re the cherry on top of everything that goes on for the convention center,” said Troy Lowrie, CEO of VCG Holding Corp. “When people decide to book a convention in Denver, they know they need nice restaurants, good hotels and world-class entertainment. We think we’re filling part of that need and are working in conjunction to bring conventions here in a way,” Lowrie added.

Millions of dollars are being invested in the area around the Diamond Cabaret, including with the planned redevelopment of Emily Griffith campus across the street and the expansion of the nearby #Colorado Convention Center. The Diamond Cabaret ownership welcomes the growth and sees itself as a good element in the core of the city.

Visit Denver, the city of Denver and Downtown Denver declined to talk to Denverite about the Diamond Cabaret. The Colorado Convention Center and Denver Urban Renewal Authority did not return inquiries about how the strip club fits in with the planned changes. “To have new growth across the street is only more exciting for us,” Lowrie said. “We only see things in Denver getting better for us.” Read more of Adrian Garcia’s report at Denverite.com.

#Denver “Black Panther” fans arrived fired up and dressed up for a screening hosted by SuCh: “#BlackPanther,” the new superhero movie that’s the first to feature a predominantly-black cast, has already broken records at the box office. Its wide theatrical release on Thursday night put it at second place for a #Marvel Universe opening weekend.

Beyond America’s normal frenzy for superpowered stories, the film has been celebrated for representing blackness in a space where fans of color have often felt left out. This was made clear before a special screening at #AlamoDrafthouse in the West #Colfax neighborhood where moviegoers showed up excited and dressed to the nines or in costume.

Local musician Su Charles, aka SuCh, organized the pre-screening program that featured slam poetry, food and a surprise Q & A with “Black Panther” actress Janeshia Adams-Ginyard.

When she saw the trailer, Charles said, she knew she had to do something special. “This is something I need to see with my people,” she said. “Any of y’all who saw ‘Get Out’ in a movie theater: You know what I mean.” Charles recalled her son’s reaction to seeing John Boyega as Finn in the most recent set of Star Wars movies, saying “Finn has hair like me.” “That’s when I realized, yo, that stuff makes the biggest difference,” she told the crowd. “It really matters.” #303 #5280 #denverite #milehighcity

Denver hangs giant sign in support of immigrants as national debate languishes:

The #CityandCountyBuilding got some new signage Thursday morning: a massive blue banner that reads, “DENVER ♥️IMMIGRANTS." In a Facebook post made Thursday afternoon, Mayor Hancock stated that the sign was a message of love in time for Valentine’s Day that he hopes sends “a clear message to immigrants that Denver is an open and welcoming city.” Thursday was a busy day for immigration news. That morning, the president of the Denver Police Protective Association testified before a U.S. House of Representatives committee that a city policy limiting police interaction with federal immigration officials was hampering officers’ ability to address the opioid epidemic. Also, multiple immigration proposals were quashed in the U.S. Senate.

Despite the events in Washington, a spokesperson from the mayor’s office said any matching timing was just coincidence.

Hancock’s post did, however, look ahead to March 5, when Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (known as #DACA) is set to expire. “Our country is demanding it be addressed with comprehensive immigration reform,” he wrote.

The tumult in the Senate is part of an effort to secure status for those undocumented minors before it expires. While their fate is squarely in the hands of national representatives, local immigration advocates see acts like the blue banner as a positive move.

Corrine Rivera-Fowler, director of policy and civic engagement for the advocacy group Padres & Jóvenes Unidos, told #Denverite that the banner shows “solidarity,” something she hopes “may encourage our congressional leaders to stand with the people in our state.” Overall, she said, city officials have done a good job to stand with local advocates. “We have felt full solidarity with our #Denver elected officials,” she continued, “and we thank them.” #303 #5280

DACA fight overshadows status battle for Denver’s Salvadorans as Washington heads into immigration debates:

Jorge Velasquez already had a lot on his mind when he learned his legal status would be terminated. On top of having three kids to raise and the rising rent for his south Denver apartment, his wife, Araceli, had been living in sanctuary for months to avoid deportation.

The immigrant from El Salvador has been in the U.S. for over 20 years. Since 2001, Velasquez has lived and worked here legally under Temporary Protected Status (#TPS), a case-by-case relief program that’s usually invoked to help migrants fleeing natural disasters. It was enacted for Salvadorans by the Bush administration after a massive earthquake.

Last year, the Trump administration announced it would terminate the program. Velasquez is now faced with the possibility that he’ll be forced to leave the country, or else live a shadowy existence in the U.S. without documentation. “I don’t even want to think about going back to El Salvador yet,” Velasquez told Denverite through a translator. With raging gang violence and little economic opportunity back home, he said, it’s simply not an option for him or his kids. Until his legal status is revoked in September of 2019, Velasquez says he and immigration activists have time to lobby congress for a path to citizenship. But higher-profile immigration fights have so far overshadowed efforts to protect TPS holders.

Someone drove a car into The Hornet, and management is going to put up a sign asking that people not do that:

A man crashed his car into The Hornet restaurant on Broadway and First Avenue on Wednesday afternoon, hitting one pedestrian and doing extensive damage to a doorway and window.

Denver Police Department spokesman Doug Schepman said the person who was hit was not seriously injured.

The driver, 51-year-old William Maheu, was driving south on Broadway and making a left turn onto First Avenue when he hit the curb, then the pedestrian and the building. Schepman said he’s been cited for reckless driving, careless driving and no proof of insurance.

He also said there were no notes to indicate that the driver was intoxicated.

Sean Workman, owner of The Hornet, said they’re working on a temporary exterior wall now so they can stay open for a “Singles Awareness Party” event tonight. They’ll spray-paint it to say “yes we’re open, no this isn’t a drive thru,” he added.

This is the third or fourth time a car collided with The Hornet, according to Workman. Sometime around 2002, he said, a car crashed into the restaurant and took out the whole corner.

Story by Ashley Dean, big thanks to Sean Workman for the first two images.

The water was clam and clear, so I became brazen and brought the camera into the ocean. I’m thrilled I could capture the light on the sand underneath the water.
Sadly we left this paradise today. We’re back in Bangkok for two days then flying into Kuala Lumpur. Then more Thailand then to Indonesia... the trip is wrapping up quickly. I look forward to reliving it when we’re back in the US and I can go through the thousands of pictures I’ve taken!

Spent some time recently with Araceli and Jorge Velasquez, immigrants from #ElSalvador who are now both facing uncertain futures. President Trump recently announced that #TPS - Temporary Protected Status for immigrants usually fleeing environmental disaster - will end for El Salvadorians, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Sudanese who have otherwise been living legally in the U.S. Araceli had been living in sanctuary fighting her own #deportation order when she learned Jorge’s status would be terminated. The parents of three citizen - just two of many in their shoes - now fear for their future.

Denver will allow taller buildings with no parking close to rail — in exchange for more affordable units:

The #Denver City Council on Monday approved a plan that could bring a cluster of 16-story buildings to the 38th and Blake Station area.

The changes passed with a strong majority, but it brought an intense debate to the council chambers: Would a surge of new residential units simply accelerate gentrification and drive out residents of nearby neighborhoods? Or could the city harness development in a way that eased the housing crisis?

Sadly, tomorrow we leave the beach and head back to Bangkok, where this picture was taken. We’ve run out of time on our visa and are headed to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In the past weeks I’ve become lazy taking pictures and even lazier pulling them off of the camera. It’s been a natural break but yesterday I got excited again and took some amazing pictures in the water... I’ll post them tomorrow.
This picture was all about the iso. It was fun to experiment with something new!

Wow what a crazy 24 hours here in Denver. Yesterday our city looked like a snow globe and now the sun is shining + everything thawing out. As a born + raised denverite, I am not surprised but more in awe of our crazy meteorology. Here’s to a relaxing Sunday, wherever you may be! 📷: @jenna.sparks.photography

Last night, #immigrants rights activists slept in Sen. Michael Bennet’s office demanding a #cleandreamact, which includes a pathway to citizenship for #dreamers and people in the US under #TPS. They managed to get Bennet, a Democrat ally, on the phone, but he said the possibility for such a policy to pass the Senate is slim. Bennet is in support of an immigration bill that has bipartisan support, though it doesn’t go far enough for some activists.

Yesterday, #Montbello residents held a heartbreaking vigil for Byron Ware, a 17-year-old who was shot and killed last weekend. Though it’s usually pretty safe in the neighborhood, the shooting was the latest in a rash of violence in the neighborhood. Residents and local activists held a march before the vigil to demand and end to the violence, but also that Denverites who live outside of Montbello see it as more than a place where crime thrives. The media, they say, only ever comes out that way for bad news.

West #Colfax neighbors envision major changes to Federal Boulevard interchange:

#WestColfax residents want to drive a pedestrian-friendly design change to one of #Denver’s most heavily-trafficked intersections.

Options for the area where #FederalBoulevard runs above West Colfax Avenue include bringing the streets down to one level and making the north-south corridor a split one-way with generous room set aside for cyclists and bikers.

The West Colfax Denver Business Improvement District and #WalkDenver are leading the Over the Colfax Clover project. The organizations plan to demonstrate temporary solutions for the cloverleaf intersection this summer ahead of seeking out money and partners for a larger, long-term transformation of the nearly 29-acre area.

Walk Denver recently counted that more than 200 people per day walk across Federal Boulevard and West Colfax Avenue. The mobility-minded organization found that the number goes up during events and games at the nearby #MileHighStadium. Some of those pedestrians might be accessing the Decatur-Federal transit station to the south. “If you look at it you’re like, ’This is so hostile to pedestrians. Why would anybody actually walk here?’” said Jill Locantore, newly named executive director of Walk Denver. “The Colfax-Federal cloverleaf is just a perfect example of a street that is just incredibly dangerous for people who are walking, biking or trying to access transit,” Locantore said.

DHA’s #SunValley project makes Meow Wolf look like small potatoes:

Meow Wolf kicked off 2018 with plans to invest roughly $50 million just outside of Sun Valley’s borders, but the nationally acclaimed art attraction is small potatoes relative to the Denver Housing Authority’s plans for the neighborhood.

DHA anticipates kicking off construction on the first two phases of its $240 million investment in Sun Valley later this year. The real estate community is watching and some predict that the historically low-income, diverse neighborhood west of Interstate 25 will not experience quite the same transformation seen in rapidly gentrified areas of #FivePoints and elsewhere.

In fact, #Denver Housing Authority officials talk about Sun Valley looking more like the renovated Mariposa District than #RiNo, when all is said and done.
