This winter I joined forces with @NeonCoat @WarrenTricomi and longstanding nonprofit organization #keen (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) for a beauty day promoting health, confidence and community for special needs girls and their mothers. We all came together to help show these ladies how to express themselves through hair and makeup 💄 . #transformationtuesday#htgivesback#diversity
What does a Synagogue, Hindu Temple and Indian food all have in common? They can all be experienced within a day with My World. Special thanks to @elliejellie for connecting us with The Temple. We really enjoyed the service and especially the Bar Mitzvah! Visiting places of worship is a great way to understand different points of view and beliefs, try it when you can! #culturalcompetency#globalcitizen#atlanta#youthdevelopment#synagogue#mandir

This week’s feature: 2018 team member, Akilah Watts (@musicwattz)! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Akilah is currently working in inpatient acute psych at a small community hospital facilitating various groups, including music therapy. She has a passion for working with children as she previously worked with children with Autism as a developmental therapist using the DIR®/Floortime™ model for two years. Akilah hails from Chicago and has a background in music education. She taught general music at an Illinois public school to grades K-6 for two years before attending Illinois State University in 2012 to pursue her Master’s in Music Therapy. She completed her music therapy internship at PCDA in Pasadena, California in 2015 and continues to reside in sunny California. Akilah traveled to Kenya in January 2017 and participated on Global Alliance for Africa’s Therapeutic Arts Program team with other creative arts therapists. During the TAP training, Akilah presented about music therapy. Most recently, Akilah attended a 10-day Music Therapy trip for Professionals in Bangkok, Thailand, provided by the Center for Music Therapy in End of Life Care, titled “Mindfulness and Cultural Competence.” She was able to work clinically and collaboratively with other music therapists in the PEDS section of Siriraj Hospital and at an orphanage with children with cerebral palsy and children with and without other developmental disabilities. She thoroughly enjoyed learning about Thailand’s rich culture. She looks forward to returning to Kenya this summer with Ubuntu Music Therapy Initiative.

As a person who loves Arabic music and dance, I've been waiting for this translation!
Notes, however, are needed. AND I want to remind non-Arabic speaking folks to abstain from making judgements, since we might not understand the cultural significance behind it all. *literally translates to a protrusion between two crevices or a piece of flesh in the vagina (the Arabic dictionary notes that it's removed during FGM)
*same word for a protrusion on someone's lip or similar
*same root word to describe an uncircumcised man
Shout out to Christina B. and her friend Nellie for the notes!

This picture is from the Berkeley Model UN conference these lovely folks and I were at this weekend! This experience really helped my #culturalcompetency because honestly it was hard but very cool to have to research and represent a country I am not familiar with and explore pressing world issues, like the ones I hope to give a small glimpse into with this project. #teamjamaica#bmun66
Today, I rocked my first fancy presenter ribbon for @childrensadvocacycentersofil’s conference. (Note to every other conference: make ribbons—they are fun.) It was an amazing time training CACs & MDTs on cultural humility, planning, and change implementation! You should have seen my face when someone told me, “I love your approach to data!” without a shred of sarcasm. 🤓 ♥️ 🏳️🌈 #nerd4life#childrensadvocacycenter#selfieday#culturalcompetency
