On January 12th my grandmother Mary Elizabeth Ford “Daisy”, passed away. She was my last surviving grandparent. Her memorial was held this Saturday the 17th in the Amasa Stone Chapel at Case Western Reserve University. My Grandfather Dr. Amasa Ford “Buzz” was a professor and professor of emeritus at CWRU School of Medicine. My grandmother graduated from Smith College with a music major, and earned her MA in history from CWRU. Together they lived an amazing life and did many great things for both their family and those outside of it.
She was part of movements such as the Peace Movement, an advocate for children, had an amazing singing voice, was a world traveler, solo, and with my grandfather and others, and talented cook.
She traveled to places such as The People’s Republic of China, Kashmir, Ecuador, Machu Picchu, and Papua New Guinea. She loved meeting new people, continually learning new skills, reading, writing, (we wrote wonderful letters to each other) and the arts. She spent many years attending the Stratford Ontario Shakespeare Festival with my Grandfather. It was their favorite.
She was an autograph collector and once spotted Vivian Leigh and a famous actor I forget together. She saw no way to get to them, but my grandmother was not easily discouraged, so she ducked under a table that spanned the room and marched straight toward them. She got their autographs.

While back in Cleveland Ohio and visiting with family I had the best gluten free burger I ever had in the dining room of the Intercontinental Hotel and Resort. They brought out the chef so I found out that they had gluten free buns, since nothing like that was on their menu. I had a nice salad on the side which was supposed to be Greek, but came out without the olives or cheese. Still very good. The burger was so good it didn’t even need the condiments that weren’t included.
For dinner: yellow tail and salmon sashimi at one of my Grandparents favorite restaurants, Shuhei.
I had a good breakfast at the same hotel and my mom and I stopped at Zimmerman’s Delicatessen in Ann Harbor where I found an array of GF spices.
