Malassezia folliculitis is an acne-like, itchy breakout that looks like closed comedones or regular whiteheads that doesn’t go away with regular acne treatments. It’s a fungus that becomes a problem when it reaches its mycelial stage, when a fungus has grown hyphae, which are filaments that allow it to asexually reproduce. If you scroll through the photos, I’ve included a photo from a textbook I have that shows an illustration of a yeast’s life cycle. The mycelial stage is at the top of the image, and this is when malassezia starts to feed on its environment, reproduce, and spread, causing our acne-like breakouts. The two species of fungi that commonly cause bumps are m. globosa and m. furfur.
Malassezia is a lipophilic fungus that feeds on the fatty acids in our sebum. As a result, you may find that if you suspect you have fungal acne that you have quite a bit of sebum production. I definitely noticed this in my own skin. Before fungal acne became a problem for me, I was using a niacinamide serum regularly and doing a pore cleansing routine once a week. This had been keeping my pores feeling clear, especially on my nose. For a while, even this routine hadn’t been working as well. I was really surprised since I had such success with it in the past, and I didn’t know what had changed! It just turns out that my sebum production was getting out of control due to the malassezia and any additional fatty acids I applied to my face. For the past five days or so I have stuck to a routine that strictly cuts out most fatty acids and potential food for the malassezia, using an antifungal cream, and other products that I will get into soon. I have already noticed an enormous difference.
My nose and cheeks feel incredibly smooth without even using any sort of BHA; my nose feels like it did before I had this problem and it has completely confirmed for me that it is in fact fungal acne. The bumps on my forehead have decreased significantly as well.
If you have any of the aforementioned skin symptoms, you should consider you may have fungal acne.
I learned this information from "Simple Skincare Science.” You should really go give her post about this a read.
Here they are now. I still have a lot of marks from picking (☄️) and I still have a few bumps all over, but they have decreased a bit. I do not have a solid routine built yet, but today is the start of something new. I have taken everything out of that routine and started fresh. As I start helloclearskin, I will build a better routine, drink more water, and eat more good food. Eventually, I hope this will all work out! Stay tuned. - K
Hi, everybody! How are you guys doing today? I’ve been good & I was inspired to create this insta to start recording my journey in getting the skin of my dreams. I am a 21 year old college student and I have been dealing with acne for almost 10 years. As you would imagine, I am tired of not seeing any improvement or changes in my skin. With helloclearskin, I will be posting my AM/PM routine and I will also show you how my skin reacts to different products. I hope we all learn something from this experiment and I wish we all end up with clear skin! Please feel free to comment or suggest anything below!

my type of acne is different from the usual. I have closed comedones all over my cheeks and jaw/chin that have been thriving for 5 years now.
They usually are not painful and would sometimes go away on their own but most of the time, they thrive underneath my skin. It wouldn't come to a head but when it does it's super inflammed. Big zits with postules would resurface on my cheeks.
For the five years I've had this type of acne, there would be times that my skin would clear up but still the white bumps would be so visible under artificial light/sunlight. I have basically used any product that claimes to get rid of it. I have been using a new product that really got rid of the white bumps (mostly) but to my surprise, it's giving me a horrible purging stage. I will create a separate post about the said product soon.
I know I've shared this before, but I honestly can't #recommend this product enough, expecially if your mostly a #allnatural#barefaced woman like me, who might have a #makeupaddiction but rarely ever wears #makeup 😂😂 I go to work every single day with a bare face. I have nothing to hide, and I'm comfortable enough, and #confident in my own #skin that I don't mind my #flaws showing on my face. I have #texture issues, #closedcomedones#oilyskin#largepores yet I'm not afraid to walk out the door without having anything on to #hide my #imperfections 💖 Never have been the one to have a #fullface of makeup on, or I don't walk out the door. That's not me, and won't ever be me, but love to wear makeup too. That being said, when I DO feel like I need some #coverage from me picking at my skin, popping pimples, causing #redness and #scarring this @itcosmetics #illuminatingcccream is my #holygrail When my face is a disaster, I take my #itcosmetics illuminating CC cream with my #itbrushes by @ultabeauty #complexionbrush and apply in light layers, until I get the coverage I'm looking for. Sometimes this is all I will put on my face, just to cover up my scars and bruises from messing with my face. I am in the shade medium, and it's the perfect match for my oilve, medium, skin with warm undertones. I do most of my videos on #youtube bare faced. I have no shame. When I run out of this, I will buy another bottle. This is the illuminating one, which gives your skin a dewy, luminous, appearance. The regular it cosmetics CC cream is just as good, just doesn't have the glowy look. Did I forget to mention this has #spf50 and also multiple anti aging benefits too? This is overall an extraordinary product, and I will never stop using this. If you have problem skin like me, or even if you don't, I highly recommend this. It's light to medium coverage, and also has skincare ingredients in it too. I'm obsessed with this. I use this more than anything in my insane makeup collection. #thecherokeegypsy and PS. I've got my grandmother hooked on it too lol. I give her tips and tricks all the time lol me and her will sit for two hours discussing makeup. She's obsessed with @itcosmetics lol.
Barebones #amroutine ...
Guys! My explosive acne from 3 weeks ago is still here and I’m starting to lose patience. I know it’s from intense stress and anxiety in personal life and I have cut out almost all products until it gets better (IF it gets better), but even that doesn’t seem to be working!
Certain insurance situations don’t lend themselves well to visiting a dermatologist so I started by emailing @toska_europeanspa and going to try the parts of their suggested @biologique_recherche regimen that I can afford and see what happens... if that doesn’t work I clearly need to buck up and just see a professional. In the meantime, here’s what I’m putting on my face in the mornings:
- @andalounaturals Apricot Cleansing Milk (to fortify and calm)
- @deciem CAIS (to help heal acne wounds)
- @paulaschoice 2% BHA (to exfoliate and get the funk out of my pores, hopefully prevent more breakout... though I do wonder if this might be exacerbating everything 🤔)
- @olehenriksen Sheer Transformation Moisturizer (this is the lightest cream I have...very sheer and absorbs quick... just to protect after exfoliating)
To get rid of and prevent closed comedones I use the 10% benzoyl peroxide lotion by Asepxia which I can only find at Walgreens. For inflamed breakouts and cystic bumps forming I use pure tea tree oil from the body shop and dilute it with an oil moisturizer on top :-) #skincare#skincareaddict#closedcomedones#acne
So sadly My skin didn't mesh well with the Dr.Jart Ceramidin Liquid 😭It did moisturize my face like nothing else, but something in the ingredients (Still working on narrowing it down) caused me to get a ton of closed comedones (CC), which is very out of character for my skin. I didn't get these CCs right away either, and my skin usually reacts right away. Since that had been the only new product I added into my routine at the time, I knew this was the culprit ☹️I'm on my way to return it 🤞🏻I will miss this product (I really loved it, well before all the CCs) and the time we spent together lol. Anyone else have any products they loved that turned on?
Totally loving my holo bag from sephora play. Anyways here's my post for the last day of #cultbeautyskincarechallenge Day 31- August Favorites. I chose one product in particular, to give a thorough review. My fave product for last month has to be Exuviance Daily Antioxidant CA10 Peel pads. It is a 10% AHA (Citric acid) that has 36 pads for $65. I cut them in half because I have a small face (I'm all cheeks). I started to use these in the beginning of August because I had opened them last September so they were due to expire. I'm so glad I did because the closed comedones I had been struggling with for several months reduced by 80%! I'm so happy I found something that worked, as I just kept hoping my retinol would kick in and get rid of them. I started to use them once a week, then twice, then every other day. I'm at everyday now but I only have 1 pad left 😢. I was hoping to have completely clear skin before finishing and moving onto a new product but oh well. I want to repurchase but I still have my good genes to use up so hopefully that will work for me too. Beautypedia gave these a bad review but I totally disagree, these are awesome! Even better, they soften my fine lines and make my makeup go okn smoother. Such a lovely product. I paid for these myself, it was my very first AHA product I bought actually.
#MorningSkincareRoutine featuring my bunny that had it's eyes ripped out by my dog. 🙄
Haven't posted a morning routine in a while. I'm always in a rush. Either way, it rarely changes.
Cleanse: #DrunkElephant Beste Jelly Cleanser - been using this in the AM for the past month and I love it, just dont like the packaging, but rumor is they're going to change that.
Treatment: #Exuviance Daily Antioxidant CA Peel - just started using these again and I remember why, instantly plump fine lines and I think it's helping my closed comedones! Further testing needed although I only have a few left .
Nourish: one pump #Vichy Mineral 89 w 2 drops #PaulasChoice 10% Niacinamide
Moisturize + SPF: #JoshRosebrook Nutrient Day Cream SPF 30- also been using this for the past month and I'm so surprised I can skip moisturizer with this! I do want to add another hydrating layer soon, something light.
Eyes: #theSREM Iceland Eye Stick - just bought this at CVS and it expires in November 😐. Also, the Soothing part might actually feel uneasy. Testing for another day or 2 ,then will decide if i want to return.
Have a happy solar eclipse Monday! This signifies a new chapter of your life, throw out the old ,negatives thoughts/behaviors and start anew.
#acnejourney 6 months into using @salimaskinsolutions
for a natrual approach to acne care.
Wearing tinted moisturizer but my skin is basically the land of closed comedones. Several on my forehead and a few on my right cheek. Super strange, just exfoliated yesterday so I'm hoping they'll sploop out when I exfoliate next.
I'm grateful for only having one new pimple pre shark week, which is super unheard of since my skin problems started getting worse in February! Center of my forehead, zing! So far hasn't come to a head but I'm not holding my breath. I'm hoping all these bumpy comedones calm down in the next two weeks, accounting for shark week and recovery week...Biggest change in my diet lately is a shockingly large amount of seafood? Specifically shellfish. Wondering if that's related; might go back to vegetarian leanings since that was when the most recovery seemed to happen for me.
I never photographed it properly so a comparison won't be fair, but my initial travel break out is a about 90% chilled out, with just the red marks to heal. I'm noticing that the marks from previous weeks are fairly light now except for the ones in my cheeks which are stubborn as fuuuuck.
Will photograph in the morning without tint on. Praying my brief spell in self confidence returns so I can just stop with the tinted moisturizer....... every day for two weeks so far 😱 Twice daily deep cleansing will only get me so far.

This clients skin is beautiful thanks to the my acne program and her consistency. But we are still dealing with some pesky closed comedones around her chin area.
I used the #myskinbuddy which deeply cleansed the pores using its ultrasonic vibrations and ions.
I was in skin geek excitement at how easily the closed comedones were extracting with just the use of Q-tips. It made the extractions much more comfortable for this teen client.
#breakupwithyourbrush and talk to me about owning one of these cool skin care tools. It's not just for acne, but also anti aging, pigmentation, and increases product penetration.
I never would have posted the third picture in the bunch in the past, but my skin has started to really transform. The right side of my face is scarred from a past surgery, as well as an ER visit to get rid of a cyst, and scarring on my cheeks. The scarring around my chin on that side of my face is what's most noticeable. That's where I was cut open to remove a cyst about three or four years ago. I was advised to see a plastic surgeon but I didn't have $800 bucks lying around that I would have needed just for the consultation.
I've been using a professional microdermabrasion machine followed with hyaluronic acid and a prescription retinoid and Vitamin A. It's working. After over 20 years of problem, confidence killing skin issues (people who have nice skin can never understand how much bad skin fucks with your life, socially and mentally), it's finally working.
I do have a sheer foundation on but it's never looked this good. No filter on these photos. Maybe I'll get up the nerve to post a makeupless picture soon 😦😁#acne#acnescarring#adultacne#microdermabrasion#retinoid#skinwoes#scarring#closedcomedones
This is me.
But not really. This is not my real face. My real face is currently (and will for a while to come, be) an assortment of black spots and acne, thanks to Pimples my companion since I was 9.
But really, more thanks to me and my finger and my horrible horrible picking habit. It's a big problem, I can't even lie. I'm not going to bore anyone with the details. I just want to say if anyone is in the same shoes as I am , I know what it feels like.
I did not want to post this, God knows... But I felt pushed to. So for whatever it's worth, fellow acne brethren, just know you're beautiful. Gorgeous! Pimples, spots and all.
To the people around me, please give me a kick when you see me put my hands near my face. I will very likely frown, shrug you off or even get upset, but believe me, deep down I'll be grateful. Thanks guys.
(Acne sufferers, please check this website out. It's very insightful and a good support space)
Gloomy day lighting, sitting next to a window in a coffee shop with no blinds or curtains. Wearing some concealer on hyperpigmentation spots and a BB cream plus translucent powder :) You can see my super stubborn closed comedones, I might try using benzoyl peroxide twice a day. Using it every other day made most of my closed comedones go away but these reoccurring ones in the same places are super stubborn :/ #skincare#closedcomedones#benzoylperoxide#nofiltergang
Redid my nighttime benzoyl peroxide routine vid lol
1) Usually use cotton pads but forgot mine at my parents, cleanse with micellar water
2) cleanse with oil (noncomodegenic), usually use baby oil but forgot that too lol so I used almond oil
3) wipe oil off with wet washcloth
4) cleanse with Asepxia neutral soap & rinse
5) (I showered after so obviously pat dry) Apply Asepxia BP (Benzoyl Peroxide)
6) Jojoba oil as moisturizer
7) Almond oil for lips and eyelids (make sure you wash the BP off first my eyes burned af the first time)
8) Vaseline for the dry areas of my face
Currently. I used the IG cam for the first time but I never know what's real even without filters lol. But lots of progress, a few comedones but I don't have hundreds like I used to & and I can tolerate the front camera now 😭 I'm hoping AHA's and tretinoin will help my hyperpigmentation now 💕 #skincare#closedcomedones#hyperpigmentation#acne
(This is a before, taken about a month ago) For those that don't know what closed comedones are, here's a picture. They are much more noticeable with makeup and under certain lighting. They're not hormonal because I've been tested and they're not caused by make-up because I rarely wore it this year with a few exceptions (like here). I'm testing out SLS free products now because SLS (sodium lauryl sulfates) are a common cause. #acne#skincare#closedcomedones
