Special Way Go Lily set in Ludlow, KY today! Way Go Lily is Amy Alvey and @mariacarrellimusic , aka the darling of Cincinnati. Mark is in Toronto and then New Hersey until we join up again near Baltimore in mid March.
Sometimes I look so serious when I play and my banjo looks huge from this angle! 😂 Just practicing super late last night after a very long day; in the banjo zone. Did you know that in the 1800s the banjo was more popular than the guitar is today? Everyone played. Ladies would sit on the porch and play for their suitors. I’m so glad I discovered clawhammer style playing. I love bluegrass banjo, but this style is just me! I’m working on remembering a bunch of old tunes I used to play and learning new ones. It’s fun to revive the old ones. Muscle memory is amazing, when you can get your analytical brain out of the way! This is June Apple arranged by Ken Perlman. I’d be playing right now, but my roommate is still sleeping! 😂 #rangeandlivestock#banjo#banjoobsession#clawhammer#juneapple#needmorepractice#missjammingwithmybanjoteacher#missoursaturdaygigs#banjoisimportantformysoul
Cumberland Gap in d#BD#F#B (ish). I swear it was in tune when I started. I really like Adam Hurt's version that starts with the B section.
I keep defaulting to my double bass left-hand to combat the fretlessness...and it's really hard to force my ring finger down.
To all the people who housed us,
The movers and shakers in their communities who booked us,
Shared a bill with us,
Kept us well fed,
And those who came to hear our songs:
We thank you so profoundly. It’s an honor to share pieces of ourselves with you.
We’re taking a little time to wind down, but we’ll be back at it at the end of March.
The Blackest Crow. Drawing inspiration from @waxwingbanjoslo, I worked up this simple duet with @alissawolfmusic. Neither Alissa or I come from Old Time beginnings, Alissa is classically trained, and I am primarily an upright bass player. I picked up the banjo about 6 months ago and have had a great time figuring it out and learning all these great tunes! So please don’t think I’m ripping off arrangements, I’m just pumped to be learning! Thanks y’all!! Oh, and if you want to see what Alissa and I look like when we know what we’re doing, check out our band @stillhousejunkies #oldtimeisgoldtime#fiddle#waltz#oldtime#oldtimemusic#banjo#clawhammer#clawhammerbanjo#dropthumbsnotbombs#duet#oldtimeduet#stillhousejunkies
I’m so, so bummed I can’t go see Abigail Washburn and Béla Fleck this week. She was one of the first clawhammer players I ever heard and I was immediately captivated by her incredible playing. Here’s a little banjo only version of “A Fuller Wine,” my favorite from the amazing Sparrow Quartet album.
