Aproveite a Vida!
So much has happened since I posted my last photo on this account- I moved to Alpine, Texas!! I’m living among the rubble of 1,000 boxes, but organized my kitchen first- so I could get back to my regularly scheduled programming! Friends are on town- we cooked dinner last night, they left and I stayed up till 2 baking donuts to prepare for our adventures today- this recipe is a good base for delicious toppings- @chocolatecoveredkatie almond butter, baked donuts. I use regular white flour but there are many options. Glazes: melted chocolate and coconut butter, coconut butter and maple syrup, maple syrup and almond butter. Mmmm... if you want to see my life unfold in a small town in West Texas, I post a lot more about it here: @the.wonderful.adventure
You know that thing that happens when you have a hair cut scheduled and then you wake up the day of the appointment and you’re having the best hair day ever, making you doubt for a split second that you’re making the right decision? That’s happened to me for brief moments about my move from my life of 30 years in Austin to a much, MUCH smaller, remote town. Like the good hair day, it’s an illusion- the change is most definitely right - the old memories of the hay days when Austin felt 100% right are just that: memories. I had to go to the campus area of UT today and as it always does being in the area, it tossed some nostalgia at me. Long gone are places like Les Amis, Mad Dogs, and the rickety old house that was full of random, funky shops, but the facade of the old art theater still shows the mural that has always been there (unless my memory is making this up). I remember going to movies there when I was on collage- lots of foreign films and off-beat indie flicks. One time the film stopped and the lights went up- while they fixed the film, an audience member went up to the front and did a stand up comic routine! Ha ha ha! Wild cheers, of course- one of my many memories of living in Austin— a beautiful city that was kind to me as I “grew up”. #bolsabonita#nostalgia#austin#thosewerethedays
How many people can write this on the outside of a moving box? Ha ha! The squirrel tails, etc, will be on their way to Alpine in a couple weeks... currently my Bolsa Bonita website only shows the purses made up and ready to ship out- primarily sale bags. It’s a good time to browse what’s there- I did some deep discounting! When I have my sewing room set up again I’ll fully open my shop again! And make some squirrel bags!
I have two pieces of news: 1) I baked my first batch of donuts! And 2) I’m moving to Alpine, Texas! Donut recipe: “Healthy Krispy Kream Donuts” (not sure I’d call them healthy!)- @chocolatecoveredkatie - super good. Basically vanilla cake in the shape of a donut with coconut butter and maple syrup glaze! Mmmmm. So wait, you say, you’re moving? After 30 years in Austin, and after almost 2 years of having the draw to far West Texas strengthen it’s pull, I made the decision to start a new chapter in my life. I’m going from a population of 1,000,000 to 6,000. And I can’t WAIT! Get me to the high desert! I’m currently still in Austin, but now have a house in Alpine to move my life and business to. Soon!! All of this has been consuming my life for the last 2 months, and that’s why I haven’t had time to make new work- but don’t worry- once I settle in to my new place and set up my fab workspace, I’ll be crankin’ out the bolsas! In a couple weeks (or sooner) my website will go into vacation mode for awhile so I can pack up my sewing machines and supplies. I’ll post info here - including any new last minute sales as I unearth things!
This photo does not do justice to what these roasted cauliflower tacos taste like!! I needed a real meal tonight so I took the time to make this @minimalistbaker recipe for roasted cauliflower with chipotle romesco sauce on freshly made corn tortillas. I can’t believe how delicious they were- the sauce is a complex taste explosion- smoky, sweet, hot, and creamy- made with roasted garlic, raw garlic, roasted almonds, fire roasted tomatoes, chipotle peppers, lime juice, and spices- it would be just as good as a dipping sauce for the nuggets of roasted cauliflower. (By the way- I bought orange colored cauliflower because it was pretty and on sale).
Look at this adorable order I just boxed up and sent to San Francisco! She took advantage of my BIG sale on retro style bags and added a zipper bag! Psst... check out the sale section on @bolsa_bonita (link in profile) to see the latest price drops. I’m serious about this house cleaning I have going on over here!
Barley flour biscuit experiment! Success! I had to order barley flour since I didn’t see it in local grocery stores (Amazon: Bob’s Redmill)- after watching Martha Stewart sub part barley flour in an all AP flour biscuit recipe, I was intrigued. Barley flour is a whole grain packed with fiber- so though eating a plate of biscuits isn’t ever going to be healthy, it’s a little less guilty with barley flour! I used 1/2 barley 1/2 AP flour. I could smell the difference as they baked- a deeper, slightly nutty aroma. They are SO GOOD! They didn’t rise as much- but I may be over mixing the dough a little in my folding method! They’re made with (and slathered with) homemade vegan butter from the easy recipe in Miyoko’s vegan Pantry recipe book. I am no longer reliant on Earth Balance buttery sticks! I can’t wait to try other pantry staples in this book!
CHOCOLATE. WAFFLES. What did you have for dinner? I’ve been waffle crazy since last weekend when I was given a small waffle iron. I’ve made @thevegan8 recipe for chai spiced waffles three times... so tonight I broke free and made her chocolate waffles with chocolate sauce! I sliced up fresh strawberries to dump on top. Heaven!
I finished up a bag for an order where a father wrote that his daughter has “an edgy streak” and thought the black glitter scorpion would suit her! I love so much about this order - a father knowing enough to order a handmade bag with a theme he thinks his daughter will like... lucky girl. And—- how cool is the black glitter scorpion! This is the small boxy crossbody style on my website! @bolsa_bonita

A few weeks ago I watched a full INXS concert on Youtube- it was so good. So sad. I will never ever tire of Shabooh Shoobah- I listen to it on every single road trip- multiple times! So anyway! This little rattlesnake bag is one of my “cross-over bags” that resides on both bolsabonita.com and thewonderfuladventure.com @the.wonderful.adventure - much to my delight, they sell better than I ever expected a rattlesnake bag to sell! I’ll have this one and many other bags this Saturday from 11-3 for @thewanderingveganatx market at @thevegannom on Cesar Chavez. It’s going to be super fun- come out for the best tacos ever and some great sales on Bolsa Bonita bags I want G-O-N-E!
I realize my Bolsa Bonita IG account has started to look like a food blog- but I AM (slowly) getting some purses made! I’m repurposing parts of purses I sewed a couple years ago for a style I no longer make- cutting down the vinyl and making simple, flat constructed bags. These are all vinyl- wipe clean, get caught in the rain, grab it with your greasy french fry fingers- the purse knows no fear. All these are posted on bolsabonita.com- link in my profile @bolsa_bonita - SALE page- $34 each. One of a kind so grab one if you like it! What doesn’t sell will be at this Saturday’s Vegan market @thewanderingveganatx Feb 3 :: 11-4 at the downtown @thevegannom (if you order online and pick it up- I’ll reimburse for shipping, just let me know!)
Hmmm... what else can I slather with my homemade vegan butter? (Maybe my jeans so I can get them on!) This sweet potato is really hitting the spot. If you’re interested in making your own vegan butter, here’s a tip: use silicon trays. Period. Now- what’s available on Amazon is an array of trays great for making cubes or small sticks to use for butter you want to use for putting on biscuits, etc- but if you want the trays that are measured into cooking sticks- showing Tablespoon marks like butter you get at the store, I recommend going to the magical butter site- yes, it’s for their weird “butter making” machine, and the sticks say “magical butter”- and it IS- but the sticks are marked correctly, unlike some of what is shown on Amazon (read the reviews before you buy on Amazon if you need accurate measurements for baking- they claim to be 1/2 c sticks, but reviews say otherwise.)
