Why did I spent my entire life savings on a single 2/3 pint? If you don’t recognise the label (see photo 2), it’s a @cloudwaterbrew, 8.5% ‘Birthday Balloon’ DIPA brewed to mark the their third birthday and was seriously doing the rounds on here last week. And for good reason.
Birthday Balloon has been beautifully crafted with Citra, Simcoe, Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin hops, so you can guess where this is heading. I’d read a lot of hype about it in the period around its launch so I’d hoped to see it locally. Luckily, my local @webroughtbeer had it on tap. I’d have liked a can for Instagram/visual purposes but for taste alone, isn’t it better from the keg? Either way, it’s worth tracking down as I hear it’s in pretty limited supply, even in London.
Straight off the bat the flavour is superb, delivering an explosion of citrus and tropical fruit. I showed up 30 minutes before closing with heavy man flu, so the aroma description is off the cards I’m afraid but as soon as I tasted it I knew it deserved the fierce hype. The tropical fruit burst is big but it was thinner than I expected for a DIPA. Still, what it perhaps lacked in mouthfeel and consistency it made up for with flavour. It flowed like the Thames; smooth, murky, dank and powerful. There was as good as no bitterness, burning alcohol flavour or any kind of tingling hop burn and was a pleasure to sip on, if a touch acidic on the finish. The flavour runs seriously deep throughout and lasts an eternity. How long exactly we’ll never know as the next mouthful is right behind it. Overripe, zesty tropical and citrus fruits like orange, mango, passionfruit and peach are abundant with an additional pine and hop profile that brings out the complexity. Cloudwater have concocted another very drinkable DIPA with just the right blend of tropical fruit, citrus tang and hoppiness that justifies the hype. Happy birthday!

Bought this bottle while at echuca on the wifey and I's wedding anniversary for my best mate/brewing partner and I to share when I found out I was having my first pup. Who woulda thought we'd find out the next day! Russian imperial stout aged in lark distillery barrels. Very complex beer that really leaned into the whisky once it warmed up a bit, and thick, like almost syrupy thick beer that coats the mouth! Great stuff. @bandicoot_brewing #bandicootbrewing#RIS#russianimperialstout#stout#beer#celebration#beerporn#beers#craftbeer
Bucket Boys x From Ben
Super lucky to get my hands on this today, Bucket Boys started selling at 6pm and by 6.10pm they had nearly sold out! For a NEIPA, it honestly doesn't get any fresher than this. The body is impenetrable, looks straight up orange juice. The aroma is absolutely jam packed with orange, fresh mango, paw paw, pineapple, lemon, passionfruit and honey. It's a true tropical fruit punch. The body continues with the massive tropical fruit notes, slightly creamy texture, complete with a massive pineapple kick and a boozy finish. Get it while it's fresh!
