The baking list no.82 - battenberg cake. This is a non-traditional lemon and lime version of the battenberg, recipe courtesy of @marthacollison and her book ‘Crave’, with homemade marzipan. I never realised marzipan was so simple to make! I wish I’d made the cake part a bit bigger so there was a better ratio of cake to marzipan but I accidentally massively misjudged my division of the batter and ended up with lots less lemon than lime... oops!

Today I learnt UK traditional dessert.
This is one of them called ‘Bettenberg’. Although colour is pretty, the taste is a little bit weird..😅
Anyway I’ll try others too. .

The archives are full of magazine clippings, sketches and photgraphs of these intricate designs. So much has changed, yet much is still on trend. Can lace ever go out of fashion? 'Beth found the welcome both courteous and business like, the Chinese treated women just like men (a refreshing change). Through initial discussions Beth was surprised to find that the lead times on hand made lace was one year. However this had not discouraged her and a verbal agreement was struck and after only two years of trading, the Lace Lady Company had the exclusive distribution rights for the finest Chinese lace in the U.K. (Lace that most represented Victorian “Battenberg” lace). Delivery times are now running at eighteen months so capitalising on each consignment has proved essential. So the Lace Lady Company now manufactured linens whose quality is second to none. Bedspreads, duvet coves, valance, top sheets, pillow cases, cushions covers and table linen were produced beautifully by hand.' - from The Lace Lady Retrospective
