I don't attend many marketing conferences. I'm not great at networking because I find "small talk" awkward.
But I did attend the #b2bmarketingexpo in London yesterday.
Here are my observations from the event: - There were a TONNE of marketing automation companies - There were a tonne of video production companies companies
Let's start with marketing automation companies. I get the concept - having a suite of marketing tools all within platform is more efficient than managing tens of other marketing tools. I understand why that's an attractive proposition to businesses. But I was surprised that none of the companies I saw yesterday had anything unique about their products. They were all doing the same thing. I even asked a few companies what they did differently to the other marketing automation companies in attendance and none of them could give me a clear answer. That's crazy to me. Though some of these companies might sweep up a lot of local business, how many will be around in just a couple of years? I suspect very few. Authenticity is FASTER than automation. I see most companies investing in marketing and valuing efficiency over authenticity. You can't automate authenticity, but you make authenticity more efficient by documenting what's happening RIGHT NOW.
And what about the video production companies? Those guys are smart. I've seen countless agencies struggle to provide audio and video services to their clients. Video production companies ARE the new marketing agencies even if they don't realise it yet. ... I also managed to take a ride on the @emirates #emiratescablecar over #londondocklands and got this sick photo.
