Abdominal acupuncture is a curative system of healing that utilizes the abdomen to regulate the function of the zangfu organs and meridians. This kind of acupuncture can treat the whole body, including internal, difficult and complex disorders, and also chronic degenerative disorders. According to the theory of abdominal acupuncture, the umbilicus has a known circulatory system and a close relationship with qi and blood flowing throughout the body. This image is showing the BaGua System and is one of my favorite acupuncture systems to work with.
Consider for a moment symptoms as tools or messengers that create opportunities for a time of true healing and balance. Both Chinese Medicine and psychology focus primarily on the root sources of imbalance. The relief of symptoms alone is not the first consideration of the Eastern physician and never displaces the goal of balancing internal function. Symptoms must of course be alleviated to initially allow the patient’s energy to be free for healing, and later, to give access to a more accurate diagnosis. However in Chinese Medicine, the alleviation of symptoms is only the beginning. We are concerned with the internal structures and the causes for the condition of energy within the body. Two patients having what Western medicine considers identical disease patterns may actually have two entirely different etiologies and therefore require two entirely different treatment plans. Therefore to us Chinese physicians; in analysis we have, as many diseases, as we have people.
Early in its development, Psychology distinguished the symptom from the character structure in which it appeared, and recognized the necessity of dealing with the underlying conditions in the effort to achieve a meaningful healing. Thousands of years ago, the Chinese described character structure and placed it squarely in the etiology of disease. The physician concerned himself with behavior , with values, with relationship to family or society, and consequently treat his patient as a total person. Sound familiar? This is how physicians in the East would look at Western Medicine’s 12 Determinants of Health or Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
