Dates have been a staple food of the Middle East for thousands of years. They are believed to have originated around the Persian Gulf and have been cultivated since ancient time. We are also blessed with different varieties of dates in Nigeria.
They are great for relieving constipation, intestinal disorders, anaemia and many other conditions. 💥They also contain compounds which have a soothing effect on the nervous system and have been known to help induce sleep.😴
They are loaded with many vitamins and fibre and are rich in minerals like, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, potassium and sulfur. They can significantly boost energy levels in people within half an hour of consumption and are a great source of dietary fibre. 💃🏿🕺🏾The high levels of potassium in dried dates have been found to be helpful in relaxing the blood vessels to improve blood pressure.💪🏾
At Oh So Hq, dates are our little guilty pleasure. They are great replacements for refined sugars. You can find these wonderful fruit in our nut mylks, granola and energy bites. #atozoffood#dates#wellnesswednesday
We often hear that Olive oil is the healthiest of them all. But why we hear you ask? 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♂️ Olives 🍈are a powerful and delicious fruit that can provide the human body with a range of health benefits including their ability to protect against ❤️heart diseases, prevent bone loss, reduce inflammation and arthritis and improve digestion. They help to soothe allergic reactions, improve blood circulation, boost cognitive function, defend against infections and lower the blood pressure.
Pure olive oil 🍈is a lower quality and lighter in colour oil than Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO). It’s simply oil obtained from the fruit of olive trees. EVOO is extracted from olives using only pressure, a process known as cold pressing. EVOO has just 1% acid. It’s the oil that comes from the first pressing of the olives, 🍈it’s considered unrefined and unaltered by temperature. It is considered the finest, having the freshest, fruitiest taste.
It is a staple ingredient for many culinary preparations and also serves a variety of medicinal purposes. The extra virgin olive oil variety contains the highest level of antioxidant polyphenols and oleic acid. It is thus a healthier option compared to other vegetable oils. Medical studies suggest that it is loaded with health benefits.
EVOO paired with a healthy diet helps in lowering the bad cholesterol levels in our blood, as it is rich in monounsaturated fats.
EVOO has a lower smoke 🔥point (burns at a lower temperature) than many other oils so at Oh So HQ, Olive oil is used to make all our salad dressings and it is sprinkled on our organic chicken for extra flavour.

It has a long history of use as a sea sickness 🌊remedy, and there is some evidence that it may be as effective as prescription medication. Ginger is effective against exercise-induced muscle pain.💪🏾 and helps ease migraines 💆🏾💆🏾♂️ Ginger has been shown to speed up digestion , burns fat and help people who suffer from indigestion, 💃🏿🕺🏾it also helps against menstrual pain.

I is for "Igba" aka garden egg in Yoruba language. The cream-coloured flesh of the garden egg has a pleasantly bitter taste and it has a spongy consistency. Garden eggs come in various colours but the cream and green variety are the most common varieties that we eat in Nigeria. They can be eaten raw or cooked with various stews and sauces.
Garden egg is high in dietary fiber, which aids digestion. Most importantly it is low in calories and low in sodium. It is also a good source of potassium, manganese, copper and thiamin (vitamin B1). Therefore making it very fitfam worthy. Its high nutritional content make it a highly recommended for pregnant women🤰🏽 The dietary fiber content in garden egg also helps to lower cholesterol levels. The leaves 🍃are useful for anaemic patients as they have been used for centuries as a natural blood tonic.
In Nigeria, we eat and cook garden eggs in a number of interesting ways. At Oh So HQ, we use garden eggs to add some oomph to our Chops. #atozoffood#gardeneggs#wellnesswednesday
J is for Jollof. Just because it's the season of merriment and jollofing, 🍴💃🏿🕺🏾we thought to throw in the number one food of the season. 🍚Although it's not an ingredient, it might has well be, as it's an essential item on any party menu. 🎊🎉 The main base ingredients of any jollof are tomatoes, peppers and onions. 🍅🌶The seasoning, spices and other ingredients have been known to cause tribal, regional, national and intercontinental debates and wars. 🤦🏽♀️☄️🥊💣 Jollof is the food that will make a number of fitfamers "fall hand" at this time of year. 🙋🏾🙋🏾♂️After all Jollof is essentially a rice dish and white rice is approximately 90% carbohydrate, 2% fat and 8% protein. 🍚Rice is a good source of iron, magnesium and folic acid but it is high on the glycemic index and is pro-inflammatory. Therefore, it is essential that you maintain an arms length relationship with jollof rice, you can look and smell but you should endeavour not to touch🙈🙅🏾🙅🏾♂️ At Oh So, healthy is a lifestyle and not a diet, so we always strive to not feel deprived and left out. We make jollof quinoa for our events so that we can truly "feel among" and join in the fun. 💃🏿🕺🏾We're not about to start a "quinoa v rice"war but we believe J-quinoa tastes just as good as J-rice!😜😋 Remember, we still need to control our portions. Have a merry and jollofull Christmas 🎄🙏🏽✌🏾🎊❤️🥁🕺🏾🍚🍛🍴#atozoffood#wellnesswednesday#jollof#healthychristmas
K is for "Kabeji" aka Cabbage in Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. And no, 🙃we didn't struggle to find an ingredient that we use that begins with K in English! 😐As we're proudly Nigerian we thought to use the local word🤥 (that's our excuse and we're sticking with it!) 😜
Cabbage is usually called a boring 😴and smelly 😷vegetable but it is an anti inflammatory, anti fungal food and is nutrient packed. It contains substantial amounts of the important minerals such as potassium, iron, folate, sulphur, magnesium, Vitamin C, K, B6 and A, and calcium. Thus making it important for maintaining bone health and strength. 💪🏾 It is also low in saturated fat, cholesterol
Cabbage belongs to the cruciferous family of vegetables and there are hundreds of varieties of it. The red cabbage contains a powerful antioxidant 👊🏾called anthocyanin, which has been shown to help prevent cardiovascular ❤️disease and also slow down the growth of cancer cells 🙌🏾 Cabbage is excellent for weight management as it is rich in 💦 and fiber thus making you feel fuller longer and helping to maintain a healthy digestive tract.👌🏽However portion control is key as eating too much of it in one sitting may cause bloating and gas. 🤢The Cabbage soup diet anyone?? 🚫❌😱It is also low on the glycemic index.
Cabbage is a smart carb.✨ It only contains 33 calories per cup✨. It is very versatile and can be eaten raw, stir fried, steamed or sautéed. 💥It is quite tasty when cooked and seasoned correctly. 😋At Oh So, we use two varieties of Cabbage in our Chops.🥗 #Cabbage#wellnesswednesday#atozoffood
