KEES VAN DOGEN, Les Amies, 1925 - Estimate EUR 1.200.000 -1.800.000 - Bidding time in Paris this week! This is one of the masterpieces presented by @sothebys on March23 at its Art Impressioniste et Moderne Sale - Artvalor News.
This painting is particularly emblematic of the artist works around 1920, hedonistic decade denominated “Cocktail Epoch”. It reveals all the painter fascination with the captivating beauty of female body, which owed him the nickname of ‘psychologue du corps’ by the art critics of the time. The eroticism emanating from this double portrait of female nudes is subtly nuanced by a veil of mystery. Van Dongen particularly liked to depict charming women, champion of very sensuous painting."One must want to touch the picture, it must be a pleasure for all the senses. The picture must be something exciting and exalt life”, he said. Van Dongen's personality was “dominated by a passion for life and a passion for painting under the sensual impulse of instinct". So this masterpiece is a true ode to the light-hearted and hedonistic atmhophere in this “fin du siécle” era, which it evoke in all its mysterious captivating yet disturbing voluptuous charm.
