In the heart of Turkey, Konya, a city of a million squats slap in the middle of Anatolia's wild plain, surrounded by open, endless prairie. Turkey's most culturally conservative city, Konya seems to be a place of tight headscarves and foreboding beards, of ostentatiously observed pieties and forbidden beers. But uncovering Konya is easy – for here, at the heart of the old city, in his tomb of turquoise tiles, is Jelaluddin Rumi.

Rumi is one of the world's most read poets. During his life, and since his death in 1273, pilgrims have come to Konya. Today, Rumi's tomb is Turkey's second most-visited tourist attraction after the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. Rumi was a mystic, a Sufi saint who loved all religions, and whose own religion was love. His followers would (and still do) lose themselves in trance and dance, sometimes spinning like tops for hours on end.

Sultan 'Ala' al-Din Kayqubad, the Seljuk sultan who had invited Mevlâna to Konya, offered his rose garden as a fitting place to bury Rumi's father, Baha' ud-Din Walad (also written as Bahaeddin Veled), when he died on 12 January 1231. When Mevlâna died on 17 December 1273 he was buried next to his father.

Mevlâna's successor Hüsamettin Çelebi decided to build a mausoleum (Kubbe-i-Hadra) over the grave of his master. The Seljuk construction, under architect Behrettin Tebrizli, was finished in 1274. Gürcü Hatun, the wife of the Seljuk Emir Suleyman Pervane, and Emir Alameddin Kayser funded the construction. The cylindrical drum of the dome originally rested on four pillars. The conical dome is covered with turquoise faience.

Gold Spouted Cup from Ur. The long spout of this gold vessel would probably have been used as a drinking straw. There are engraved decorations around the upper rim and around the base. The gold sheet was hammered.

The source of this type of gold is unknown but probably it was imported into Mesopotamia. Early Dynastic Period, circa 2600 BCE. From the Royal Cemetery at Ur, Southern Mesopotamia, modern-day Iraq. Part of objects allotted to the British Museum from Ur excavation season 1927-1928 CE. (The British Museum, London).

Wiki: Nandi (Sanskrit: नन्दि, Tamil: நந்தி, Kannada: ನಂದಿ, Telugu: న౦ది, Odia: ନନ୍ଦି) is the name of the gate- guardian deity of Kailasa, the abode of Lord Shiva. He is usually depicted as a bull which also serves as the mount to the god Shiva.
.
Nandi is described as the son of the sage Shilada. Shilada underwent severe penance to have a boon — a child with immortality towards Lord Shiva and got Nandi as his son. It is said that Nandi was born from a Yajna performed by the Shilada and his body was clad in armour made out of diamonds when he was born.[9] Nandi grew as an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and he did penance to become the gate-keeper of the Lord Shiva as well as his mount.

The Etruscan Kings - The settlement of Rome continued, but was taken over by the Etruscan Kings from 616-509 BC. The Etruscans were civilized people, who ruled Italy from Bologna to the bay of Naples. The Etruscans wanted Rome for its strategic position on the Tiber and took it. Tarquinius Priscus- the first King, governed Rome from 616-579 BC. He chose 300 noblemen, who advised him and they became known as the Senate. The etruscan Kings added a new village for Rome, further down the river Tiber called Ostia, as well as building Rome's first bridge and constructing the first Roman temple to Jupiter- the God of the Gods. However, around 509 BC, the Etruscan Kings were finally removed and the word Etruscan became an offensive word to the Romans. The Senate now ruled Rome... this is the birth of the Roman republic. #interesting #facts #history #ancientrome #rome #archaeology

A Turn of the Thumb – Gladiators and the Thumbs Up

This week on the blog, archaeologist @digitwithraven explains the ‘thumbs up’ gesture that popular media have come to associate with gladiatorial combat and the granting of life or death.

Was this gesture actually a thing in the Roman Empire, or have we misunderstood the meaning of ‘a turn of the thumb’? You can read all about it here: http://eaglesanddragonspublishing.com/a-turn-of-the-thumb-gladiators-and-the-thumbs-up/

Archaeologists find fossils, Mayan relics in giant underwater cave in Mexico https://phys.org/news/2018-02-archaeologists-fossils-mayan-relics-giant.html

Archaeologists who have been exploring the world’s largest #underwater #cave—recently discovered in #Mexico—presented their findings Monday, including #fossils of giant #sloths and an elaborate shrine to the #Maya #god of commerce.

Researchers discovered last month that two large networks of underwater caves in Mexico’s #Yucatan peninsula, the Sac Actun and Dos Ojos networks, are in fact connected, forming the largest such structure on Earth.

Diving with SCUBA gear, they have been exploring the #ancient relics left in the caves over the millenia, in a project sponsored by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (#INAH). Researchers believe the #water level in the #caves has fluctuated over time, and that they were a source of water in times of severe drought—a sometimes perilous one.

Some of the animals and humans who ventured inside never made it out alive. Today, their remains are a #treasure trove for scientists, enabling them to piece together bits of the cave’s history dating all the way back to the Pleistocene epoch (2.6 million to 11,700 years ago). The animal remains include gomphotheres—an extinct elephant-like animal—as well as giant sloths and #bears, archaeologists told a press conference.

Then there are the artefacts left inside by humans: burnt human bones, #ceramics, wall etchings and more.

Two years ago @amaxmen and I set out across Sudan as archaeologists scrambled to uncover Nubian artifacts, tombs, pyramids and entire cities. Visit @undarkmagazine to read the story! Now that the stories out I'll be sharing all the images I've been holding onto.

Two years ago, @amaxmen and I set off on a crazy adventure across Sudan exploring 3,000 year old tombs, temples, holy mountains and pyramids. We spent nights camping next to ancient pyramids in the desert, early mornings before sunrise in boats floating down the Nile river, and crawling through ancient, freshly discovered tunnels with archaeological teams. To this day its my favorite assignment ever. Thanks so much to Amy and the @undarkmagazine team for all the work, and helping it see the light of day!
