It’s #socialworkermonth so I figured I’d spend some time devoted to that. The first thing I want you to know is that most social workers show signs of secondary TRAUMA, which means we by default absorb the emotional burdens of others. This results in symptoms of PTSD such as fear in public places, isolating from friends, anxiety, insomnia... and total burnout occurs within the first few years. I’ve been doing this 11 years now as a probation officer for the State if Hawai’i. 🏆 A lot of the experiences I have I can’t go home and talk about or share with friends because it’s confidential or no one will understand. I keep a lot of secrets. Being a probation officer has exposed me to a lot of horrific, tragic things and sadly, very few success stories. At the level I work at people are often at their absolutely rock bottom, or close to it. I feel this has given me tremendous insight on my community and humans in general. I search for hope and do my best to support each and every person no matter what they’ve done in some way. But this job has also made me jaded. I can be cold at times and things that would break a person I have to listen to and absorb without a reaction. This thick skin is necessary to keep going day after day. #anyquestions
And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.
Regrann from @keishabottoms - Atlanta is the birthplace of the Civil Rights movement. In that spirit, the City supports the right of our youth to peacefully demonstrate and commends them for remaining engaged and passionate about this national issue. I applaud the diligence and commitment of the young people who have galvanized a movement to effectuate change across the nation.
As much as #Millennials#pissofftheworld and as much as we like to rag these #highschool and #juniorhigh#kids for destructive behaviors we were all guilty of in the past, I must commend and respect their #youthfulenergy and the drive to do what alot of my 80s-born age group didn't really take nearly as #feverpitch of a response to protesting in #gunviolence at places we send children to learn.
Maybe if some of these #egomaniacal#BabyBoomers would listen to the younger leadership that they didn't want taking office, such as Mayor Bottoms of Atlanta, or better yet implemented what's being called for then maybe the measures needed to curtail #schoolviolence would have been in place by the 90s and 2Ks. But these #oldfarts would rather complain and say their own grandkids need to be suspended from school or better yet incarcerated or killed in protest because they dropped the ball years ago with us.
I also believe that teachers should not be armed because, as a former teacher, I know there are and have been some that would not use weapons to protect kids, but rather hurt them out of anger and hatred for the children they teach.
