'C40, One City at a Time, 2017'
For '2° C', our current show on climate change, Vicky Smith built a mixed media city sculpture from recyclable found materials, cardboard cut outs, clay, cement, wood and collaged photographs. She took a photograph of the sculpture focusing on female figures, the city, rubbish, movement and the effects a city environment has on an individual’s psyche day to day. What impact does the city have on climate change? Can a city be at the forefront of sustainable urban development by pursuing a zero-emission policy? In this photograph of fictional street corners, derelict dirt buildings, abstract female figures cut outs that hold their heads in their hands, are gasping out loud bombarding the viewer with the question, how can we fix climate change; do we put cities in charge? The hazardous sense of chaos, panic and anxiety in relation to this question is captured in the photograph. The environment we live in is changing every day, can cities really make a difference to our ever changing world?

"On June 1,2017. President Donald Trump announced that he is withdrawing the United States from the global climate change agreement. If our leaders refuse to lead, citizens of the the world will." #aninconvenientsequeltruthtopower
AL Gore is such an incredibly accessible human being. I can't believe I almost stayed home tonight. I thought that I would come out of the room filling dismal about the world, but the information presented was very comforting in a lot ways. #algore#aninconvenientsequeltruthtopower#climatechange
I don’t really know how to write this without sounding evangelical but here goes anyway. Yesterday I was able to watch Al Gore’s new film, “An Inconvenient Sequel”. It was the most important film I’ve watched this year. The film touched my heart about a topic that is so important to me- Our Home. I’m passionate about houses but I’m even more passionate about this big beautiful place that we all share together, so this film got me. Even though the message at times is frightening, the overall take away is incredibly positive. We’ve got this. Humanity’s moving in the right direction and we all just need to use our voice, our vote, and our choices to make the changes we need to make the world a healthier place. Gore said (and I’m paraphrasing), “we aren’t going to be landing on Mars making it our new Home when we can’t even evacuate people out of New Orleans”, and he’s absolutely right. When I’m bummed about climate change I often think about Plan B- but there is no Plan B. Fighting is Plan A. If you get a chance to watch it, you won’t regret it. ❤️#inconvenienttruth#beinconvenient#algore#aninconvenientsequeltruthtopower
💩💩💩💩 #aninconvenientsequeltruthtopower#bonniecohen#algore Former Vice President Al Gore continues his tireless fight, traveling around the world to train an army of activists and influence international climate policy. Cameras follow him behind the scenes -- in moments both private and public, funny and poignant -- as he pursues the inspirational idea that while the stakes have never been higher, the perils of climate change can be overcome with human ingenuity and passion.
Thrilled to hear ideas and field questions from students in Brooklyn, following a screening of #aninconvenientsequeltruthtopower . It was so inspiring to hear how kids are speaking #truthtopower and being heard. Thanks @emilyalixfano for inviting me. @carey.stanton AMAZING resources #NWF#climateclassroom . Thank you both for the great work you are doing. Keep going...! Xo

Find your inspiration 🌱 this 2nd hand book might be one of the most beautiful I own. Filled with inspiration and motivation, I just love to turn the pages when I’m in need of exactly that. The sequel is already on my Christmas wishlist. (About that: if you decide that you want to celebrate Christmas with presents, make a specific wishlist that you can give others. This not only makes life a whole lot easier for them, but it also ensures that you get something you value and you can actually use. Contrary to quite some Zero Wasters and minimalists here on instagram, I do believe in the art of giving presents. I understand the problem of consumerism all too well, but that’s why I called it the art of giving. Make sure you’re doing so sustainably and eco-friendly. I’ll be sharing a story about this soon, so stay updated 😉Also: one precious, thoughtful gift is better than 10 random sale scores. 🎁) Anyways, the movie that inspired this book changed my life. It got me excited about environmentalism and pushed me in the direction I am going today. This is why I was so excited when I heard that ‘An inconvenient sequel’ is coming out. November 23rd! Guess who’ll be first in line 🙋🍿

Deep Horizon I and Deep Horizon II, acrylic on canvas (20x20 cm)
Our reliance on fossil fuels has impacted on the greenhouse effect and climate change. The quest for fossil fuels in the form of global oil corporations and conglomerates has had some of the most disastrous manmade environmental impact - both at sea, on land and animal and marine life.
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill and the Gulf of Mexico oil spill) began on April 20, 2010, in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. Killing eleven people, it is considered the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. The US Government estimated the total discharge at 4.9 million barrels. After several failed efforts to contain the flow, the well was declared sealed on September 19, 2010. Reports in early 2012 indicated that the well site was still leaking. The spill was also notable for the volume of Corexit oil dispersant used and for application methods that were "purely experimental." Scientists concluded that mixing oil with dispersant increased toxicity to ecosystems by 52 times and made the gulf oil spill worse."
In September 2014, a U.S. District Court judge ruled that BP was primarily responsible for the oil spill because of its gross negligence and reckless conduct.
The Deepwater Horizon series of paintings refer to the grand tradition of marine painting - documenting great seafarers and nautical heroics.
