When your parents send you pictures of what's to expect when you return to get your pup in Indiana 😅 also one of the trees fell into our pond and my dad says he's going to hook up Jinx to a harness to pull it out. Can I just stay in India and teleport Jinx here? ☺️ one can dream right? It's 4am here and it's my last test out day. Tomorrow is graduation. Texas weather is similar to India so I'll get this warmth back after a couple days in the north, but I don't think long skirts and light scarves will cut it 🙃
Ashtanga is a form of asana yoga where you work one on one or in guided self practice with a master. Although this is by far my favorite style of asana (very physically intense, highly meditative), the politics of ashtanga are fascinatingly similar to oligarchic political structures I have worked so long to oppose. .
To be a certified ashtangi you have to pay to join Mysore - or what is essentially a glorified group practice room in India. The gym, started in India, only recently allowed locals to join... Once you join the gym a hierarchy of practice is set in place. There are set flows or postures of the body. You start at the beginning, going pose by pose replicating a specific physical programming. Once you reach a pose you cannot do, you stop and start again the next day. Going only as far as you can accurately conform your body, replicate assembly line. The sequence is always the same. Those who can do the most poses get an earlier time slot in the gym. Immediately a hierarchy is set based on the physical capabilities of the body. It may take you anywhere from 6-infinite years of daily practice, daily payment, to become a recognized practitioner. This is pay to play on steroids. Pay with your wallet, pay with your body, pay with your time.
Yoga is an eightfold path to reach truth - samadhi. Asana (Sanskrit for ‘seat’) - the physical poses or what we understand as “yoga” in the West - is actually just one branch of yoga. These poses were originally created to help monks sit for longer periods of time in order to meditate and pursue the other 7 paths to samadhi. .
Yoga has also become a multi billion dollar industry. Like I have observed in religion, politics and academia, yoga is not immune to the grip of competition, oligarchy. So much could be said about the gentrification and commodification of spiritual paths. As a white yoga teacher from the west I am definitely complicit in this, and being in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica was a constant, vivid reminder.
As I keep exploring communities, philosophies - I continue to observe patterns. I am now more aware of how political issues can manifest and be explored through the physical body.

Tomorrow’s the big day! We hope to see you at our soft opening. You can expect music, refreshments and an introduction to the “yesterday, today and tomorrow” of your favorite HBCUs.
To-do list for today: breathe in, breathe out, set intentions, meditate. Recently I’ve lost my sense of being grounded, so today I set the intention of doing whatever I needed in order to find it again. Between clients at work I decided to spend some time outside reading my book, then came to my mat and decided I wouldn’t leave until I felt some sort of purpose. I sat in silence and tried to bring my focus internally to start meditation, as I did I noticed my heart beat more with each moment that passed and knew that was it, that was my purpose. As long as we are all living and breathing on this planet, we have a purpose. Make sure you find yours ✨
There are flowers everywhere for those who want to see them.

🌟I have been so excited about being on staff for the @yogagoddessacademy 200 hr Yoga Teacher Training that starts on March 10th.
🌟I took my first 200 hr training 4 years ago and learned so much about my own practice through that experience. Last year I completed my 300 hr training and was once again thrilled to be in a program again. One of the reasons I love this practice so much is the learning never stops. Every day I learn something new from my students, other teachers, or myself. Choosing to take a training program was such an awesome decision for me and allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the practice of Yoga. .
🌟I’m excited to be a part of this first @yogagoddessacademy online training program and help others discover so much more about themselves through this process!
🌟And one of the best things about our training is since it’s fully online you can do it at your own pace and learn from people all around the world! Join us by heading to the link in my bio!

Our Story 💙
The Kula Collective birthed itself one fine day in a small, highland village of Guatemala, the seed of an idea that made itself known among an existing group of friends and colleagues, a seed that, once planted, grew with a fierce desire to be alive and be known. Through the combined passions of a close family of facilitators and coordinators, arose a collective intention - to facilitate a global spiritual awakening through a thriving collective community, built on a solid foundation of integrity, sustainability and freedom for all.
We are Kula, We are family ✨✨✨
“She believed she could and she did.”
Studio Director @sfellm Is glowing after teaching her final practicum. We can all look forward to some inspiring new teachers coming in to the HYU fold in the upcoming weeks!🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 #teachertraining#ytt#yogastudies#newyogateachers
Year 2 of Vedic Astrology lessons started yesterday. I’ve got a brand new giant manual full of new information and am happily digging in. This year I have two new murti’s to help my studies. Sarasvati from Madurai and Agastya from Chennai.
I’m already having fun planning my 2019 India trip which I’m imagining will see me in Vaitheeshvarar for a week or two for Nadi Astrology before the tour and then coming home with the tour group after our adventure. I may make a trip to the north of India late 2018 and come back to wrap up all the trainings AND... to close the circle for a final time in Carrboro.
We/ I am moving on. The rent is too damn high. But I imagine I’ll keep sharing what I know here and there in some yet to be realized way?
I have a few ideas, but my favorite so far is what Sridhar told me to do, which interestingly was my initial gut reaction when I found out about the rent increase: just find a tree near my tiny house and teach in the traditional way. Be outside. Practice and study when it’s cold, practice and study when it’s hot, practice and study when it’s raining. I’d get a canopy, but we’d learn inside of nature and take walks and build fires. It really is my favorite idea so far... Anyway, all will continue as is through 2018; and this will be the last year of YTT, AYTT, and Grad Studies in Carrboro. It’s too soon to know what comes next, but I feel overwhelmingly calm and okay about it all, ready to keep taking one step at a time.
I’m taking applications through March 31. Be in touch if you want to join one of our programs in this sunset year of @heartofyogaschool in Carrboro.
It’s Spring! Happy Equinox. A time for awakening, blooming, refreshing 🌷🌻🌷 Warm up and move into new spaces with your practice. Set intentions. Whatever you give your attention to will grow 💐 #bakeandbend#puffpuffpose
In our final month of #YTT we have been assigned a beautiful challenge: #meditate every day for a month. Doesn’t matter how long or what we use to get our zen on, we just need to sit. After 17 days, I’ve discovered...
- I’m motivated by data (hence the #muse biofeedback gadget) and love seeing the numbers. The app has challenges that help keep me engaged. - #mantras aren’t especially helpful so far 🤷♀️
- I have to do 10 minutes of #yoga before I sit - #alternatenostrilbreathing is probably the single most effective technique for me to drop into the meditative state
- darkness is also essential for me to turn inward so I started to use a blindfold - I’ve started to embrace the sessions where my mind wasn’t calm, because it means that I picked a good time
- still feel like I’m not doing it “right” 😂 (and yes even though I know that by doing it at all I’m doing it right)
How do you meditate? 🙏🏻❤️

Notice when you’re being reactive.
Notice when you’re taking out your negative feelings towards other people.
Notice that you can control your emotions.
Notice that by you taking out anger, frustration, or your personal *issues* on others (knowingly or unknowingly) you can hurt other people.
Notice that you are not your emotions, but you can control them.
Notice that you don’t have to suppress your emotions, just be aware that you’re not taking them out on other people.
Notice, create awareness, breathe and accept yourself.
It's the second week of #wonderwomenwednesday and today I'm sharing 4 entrepreneurial women I admire 💫💫💫 first up is a dear friend from high school @Cardelucci ! Jess is a gifted photographer and graphic designer and she's made a name for herself in fine art photography. I especially love her most recent collection of images of @pointreyesnps - they bring me back to foggy spring days birding among the cypress 💫💫💫 to her right holding the epic #crowpose is @cherylfyoga who I met in @vermontlawschool ! We both went very non-traditional routes following our degrees there and I appreciate her open honest posts about her struggles with depression, drug addiction, and eating disorders. She's out speaking her truth and not giving two shits if you don't like it😍💫💫💫 bottom left is @brookeyogini My teacher from my 200 Hour #ytt - she has a gorgeous way of teaching that brings passion into the room, invites you to explore your heart, and expand your belief in your abilities. If you're considering a teacher training, she's a wonderful guide. 💫💫💫 last up is Lisa who owns @lotusmassagemoab
She was my neighbor in Moab when I worked @archesnps and I love her ebullient laugh, and the warmth of her smile. She's out there in #Moab offering a way to care for your body after a long day of playing in the sandstone wonderlands. You owe it to yourself to make it in for a #massage with her. 💫💫💫 check these women out, support their business and if you feel moved to do so, make a post today of four women you admire and put the hashtag #wonderwomenwednesday on there so we can meet them! This weeks #WednesdayWisdom is brought to you by our super-mom, super-instructor Inese ☺️🌻❤️Talking about how to personalize your practice.
“Erase from your mind what you think a pose should look like and find a variation that feels like medicine for you.” I am very dedicated to my own practice and so I try to make it a very personal experience for my students, to keep them focused in their body, but I also think it’s important to be able to laugh and take yourself lightly. So my classes are also very playful. I believe a great yoga practice is one that tests you in many ways, one that questions you about your life and one that inspires you to change and cultivate the life you love. “Use the poses to get deeper into your body, don’t use your body to get deeper into the poses.”
Let’s wish Inese and all the beautiful mother’s tonight a #HAPPYMOTHERSDAY by enjoying a #FREE flow with them, at 6pm at @daratma .
✨Inese’s weekly class:

Day 3 - EARTH! It’s all getting very serious in the shala 👆🏼Not really! I can’t keep the smile off my face! I am SO happy here.
Yesterday I only face planted the floor once, today I think I got it close to ten (side-crow to kundinyasana to chataranga transitions 🤪) but the awesome thing is, I’m not afraid to try! Something has shifted, perhaps it was here, perhaps it was all the practices leading up to this training but I just feel BRAVE. Brave to try, to fall over, to laugh! To stop looking at others and seeing their fancier postures as a sign that I’m not good enough. BREATHING! Feeling. Smiling. Finding joy! Just being myself. Nothing to prove, just turning up 🙂
Self belief is hard, you don’t just start believing, it’s a practice that takes a lifetime. The yoga mat is where you learn. It’s where you catch the thoughts and come back to the breath and realise that you are enough, just as you are. 💜 I wish all of this for you too. With love from Goa xx
Sunrise sadhana with an extra special ocean rock savasana adjustment for my #ytt students, as they allow the sound of the waves wash their thoughts away and the heaviness of the rocks ground them closer to the Earth.
“Sometime over the past six or nine months my personal practice has changed quite a bit. I’ve started to figure out what it means to be inside a moving meditation. I feel my body, the room, the energy from the people around me, hear the teacher’s voice, but the rest of the world seems to fall away.” -Doug is in our current #YTT cohort & is an overall wonderful human being! 💛 He’s our student spotlight for last week’s newsletter, so if you see him in class, make sure to say hi! 👋🏻 If you’re thinking about YTT, Fall Enrollment is now open! Email us for more information: email@example.com 🤗
If you want to deepen your practice or share your love for yoga with others then today is the day that you sign up for our 200 hour yoga training starting in Aug!! You will get a chance to learn about all things yoga, whether that be anatomy, philosophy, or finding your voice!! Link in bio💙😊
I’ve been working on opening up the back body a lot the last few weeks in my classes.. something I struggle with due to poor shoulder mobility so I tend to really crunch into my lower back if go deep into backbends. To avoid this requires a lot more focus on the breath, using your core and legs a lot more in backbends. Also, try and aim your chest open rather than bending back from the hips 🌙 With help on shoulder mobility in backbends, try poses like eagle arms and puppy pose at the start of your practice. Happy backbending 🙌🏼 join me today at 5pm for Flow OR 6:15pm for Hot Vinyasa at @hotyogaedinburgh ✨
