it was absolutely not possible for me to take even a halfway decent selfie today. the idea today was to do a speed run of 7 x 200m sets. which i did but not as fast as i would have liked. and i’m not one to normally make excuses but i had a bizarre social interaction moments before and was completely thrown off (it involved an old man falling off a treadmill). and my garage flooded this morning. like seriously flooded💧. but hopefully that’ll be fixed by this evening. any way, what i’m really rambling about is that i simply wasn’t in the right headspace for a real speed run. it was a good, short workout though 🤷‍♀️ •

Transformation Tuesday! The left pic is July 2014 when I was 208 lbs and the right pic was my last race of 2017 before my leg injury. I saw myself falling into old habits and started to get healthy. I ate healthier along with walking which eventually turned into me becoming a runner. I never thought I would like to run, EVER. I was always a team sports girl. Running is a love/hate relationship, today I love it. 🏃🏻‍♀️💪🏻

I realized I was really improving with the challenge of keeping up with the group.  Cherie told the women in our group about Arete and I was immediately interested, but I was worried I wouldn't be fast enough.  Now part of the team, I've never felt that my times were criticized.  It's so motivating to have a group of women with the same interest. There are so many options for where and when to run, I can always find a group that fits what I need. The best part is how fun and inclusive the group feels. It's great to show up at races and have a group of women who warm up together and encourage each other.”

Watching the #winterolympics has me thinking thinking a lot about how thankful I am for snowboarding.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I may be focusing on running now, but snowboarding has been a huge part of my life for nearly two decades. It's brought me many wonderful things from friendships to travel to meeting my husband 💜
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But the most recent thing that snowboarding has done for me is giving me a wake up call that I desperately needed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Last year, my husband and I traveled to Banff in Canada, a beautiful place with some pretty nasty mountains. Once we arrived there I realized something. I no longer knew how to snowboard in my body. I'd gained so much weight that everything felt wrong. My balance was off. I couldn't push myself up to stand because I lacked strength and my belly was in the way. I was exhausted after one run. I could barely get that one run done because everything felt so WRONG.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I skipped days of riding. While my husband and our friends went out, I stayed at the hotel and walked around the village of Banff, hating that I'd let things get this bad. When I finally did go back to the mountain, I spent the day alone, trying to learn how to ride in this body on easy trails.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I was so miserable. But it was a wake up call.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I got back home, I started working out in earnest six days a week. After a month of HIIT, we went back out to the local hills and I was happy that things felt a little better. But I knew I had work to do.

A few weeks ago, my husband and I went to our local mountain, and I was stoked that I fit into all of my snowboard gear from before I gained the weight. But was even MORE stoked that I could ride again. It's the ultimate victory for me, a clear sign that a year of hard work paid off. And it's given me so much more than just being able to make it down the mountain too. My overall health is night and day from a year ago. My doctors are thrilled with my progress. My husband is happy to have a happy wife again. I can do all the things I love without worrying that my body is going to stop me.

This is a #latergram from yesterday's run. Sometimes there is a place for #noexcuses but yesterday I should have stayed home..😝 Why? Because this old lady dropped her phone while having a nice cup of coffee and tweaked/pulled/strained her neck when picking up said phone. Brilliantly I proceeded to head out for some 600s (ended up doing 7 repeats and a total of 7 miles). They were unremarkable. Spent the rest of the day popping Advil and having a magic bag on my neck!🙈🙈👊

When I started this account, I promised to share the good, the bad and the ugly. Welp friends, today was an ugly. We had a snow/ice storm yesterday/overnight and the roads and sidewalks are terrible. Cars were having trouble stopping in front of stop signs and I was slipping all over the place. I decided to stop because it just wasn't worth risking getting hurt. I can't wait for winter to be over 😫 🏃🏻‍♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This is the difference between running with an almost 20 mph wind and running into an almost 20 mph wind. 😂 I had a rough last couple of miles, as you can see- it almost felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere with that wind!  But I finished running, so that’s something to be happy about.  I have a long way to go with this better pacing thing, too.  I definitely prefer more time/days between long runs, but as I work my running in around the hubby’s schedule flexibility is key these days.  I was home close to 830 this morning.  I do enjoy running into and seeing sunrise. 🌅

We had about 5 inches of snow Saturday, yesterday had a high of 44, then Thursday will be a high of MAYBE 50 again. Maryland weather, I think you're drunk 😂😂 about 3.5 miles, at about an 8:15 avg pace, today while little guy was in prek, and will probably go back out with him later, because, umm hello sunshine!! 🌞 my knees were hurting a bit today, but I'm happy to have gotten out there, and may take an extra day in between runs. Boo to old knee injuries and "old lady knees" 🤦😩

Many runners at this point in a cycle will begin to panic thinking race day is right around the corner.  In all actuality, it isn't.

If you have suffered from a sub par training block, just know you have a solid 4 to 6 weeks left to make some serious sharpening happen.  You've laid the ground work, now lay the specificity.

I hated sport at school and didn’t take up running until my early 40s. If I can, believe me, anyone can. So what if you just plod? So what if you’re slow? So what if you don’t have the latest running shoes or expensive kit? Get out there and try, you’ll be hooked, that I can guarantee! You’ll be doing it for you, it matters not what others think!💪🏻

I think, “this is going to suck” 🙄 or “there’s no way I’ll hit those paces” 🙄 - and *most* of the time it ends up being great 🙌🏻! You know the motivation is back when you wake up before the alarm and get excited for a progression run on the treadmill!  6 miles total (9:41, 9:31, 9:23, 9:14, 9:05, + 1 mile cool down). There is a picture in our house (picture 2) that is a nice reminder when I start to compare myself now to myself a year ago.  It’s from Alice in Wonderland and says, “It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then”. I am so proud of this progression run because I felt strong the whole time. -

We have had a terrible ice storm move through overnight.  I woke up to a 4:30am text that the schools were on a 2-hour delay.  As I ran, I was trying to figure out how I was going to arrange my morning (opening the gym, getting the kids to two different schools at two different times, etc,) and by 5:30am I got another text that all schools were closed for the day! With as bad as the roads are, we also made to decision to not open the club until 11am.  So just like that I had my 6 miles in and the morning to myself.  Would moms agree that one of the best things is when you get to tell your kids “no school” and give them fresh baked cinnamon rolls.  #worklifebalance

Good morning!! I wasn’t going to post today, but I just had to document the shorts & tank☝🏽 in February! I woke up to 68°🤗 Never mind the 16mph winds, I didn’t even care. The 68° felt so nice! A little weird, but I’m not going to complain. I’m sure we will get a blizzard in a few days🤷🏻‍♀️
So yesterday I took a rest day. I had taken a longer stretch between rest days, so I woke up feeling like I needed a solid day off. No running, no nothing. It was glorious & I woke up this morning (dark & early) ready to run. Just 8 easy on the schedule but it was the perfect distance for me today. I finished up, got in some weights & core work and stuffed my face with a big breakfast....my absolute favorite meal of the day. Do any of you lay in bed at night & get excited thinking about your morning coffee??😆 I do🙋🏻‍♀️ I look so forward to my coffee!! Best part of the day!❤️
Ok friends, I have a full day ahead. Some work, a visit with my chiropractor and then some cocktails with my besties🍻🍹 Happy Tuesday!!

These everyday champions volunteer to care for the people in our city who chose to cope with unimaginable trauma with an immediate yet dangerous escape. Many in the running community are former/recovering/fighting addicts themselves. Running can save more lives, but in the meantime, OPS is caring for the countless people stuck in this cycle.

Been listening to a podcast featuring David Goggins on my last few runs and feeling an extra push. This piece really stuck with me he essentially said: motivation is crap. It’s based off feelings that ebb and flow. Instead be DRIVEN in a way that pushes you through your feelings. That’s how things get done. @davidgoggins •

One month is way too long to be on steroids and hopefully now my emotions will stabilize again! Also can start running again. 🏃🏼‍♀️ hopefully a treadmill run tonight if I’m not stuck in the office late! Also, booked a vacation for June! Can’t wait!

I haven’t posted much about running recently. I have, most definitely, still been logging miles. However, every single one of those miles have been done on the treadmill. Between my post-marathon injuries and some health issues that I’ve been having, I have not run outside since November 11th. It’s been super depressing and annoying. (Although, I have found some Netflix series that I love! ☺️) Well, that streak ended today. I mustered the courage to run outside. I had to stay super close to my house (see: health issues) and had to come in a couple times, but I did it!! I ran outside! And it was freaking glorious! See the elation in that picture? That’s how I was the entire time! I got choked up when I took off because I realized just how much I have missed my early morning pavement pounding. 
Thankfully, I have a big doctor’s appointment on Friday and will, hopefully, start getting some answers to what’s going on with me soon. In the meantime, I will take any road miles I can get! Happy Tuesday, friends! I am still riding that awesome runners high!! 💃🏻 6 miles {8:36, 8:21, 8:18, 8:11, 8:05, 8:05}

The OMG per @shalaneflanagan Yep, that was today’s workout! 😳🤢😵 It lived up to its name!! I thought I might puke. I wondered if I’d die. I even thought about crying. But I also kinda loved it! There’s something about crazy hard workouts—the ones where I question my ability and doubt I’ll be able to finish them. I love how they push me out of my comfort zone, make me work harder and ultimately prove that I’m stronger than I realize 💪🏼 After finishing a workout like today I feel like there’s nothing I can’t do! 👊🏼

Fighting a few aches and pains this morning. today’s speed workout was slower than planned but still managed to bust out 8 800s @ 7:15 pace without pushing it over the limit. Trying to listen to my body more this training cycle and I could have bumped it up a bit, but cautiously held back. If you follow me already, you know that I struggle with postpartum depression and anxiety. I unfortunately never realized the severity of it all until I lost my dear friend Kristin back in June. That’s when I really realized how bad I was struggling. I also realized how much more needs to be done to spread awareness for PPD. Motherhood has not been an easy path for me at all. My maternity leave was filled with sadness, anger, and just feeling SO lost. I was convinced I was an awful person because I didn’t understand why I wasn’t happy like everyone said I would be? Things got a little better when I went back to work at 12 weeks PP and felt like I had a little bit of purpose but that disconnect and constant sadness was still there. When I lost Kristin, I felt like I hit rock bottom. Being a mom is tough. Being a mom with a history of mental illness is even more tough. I’m thankful I had (and have) such a strong support system through my family and friends as well as this very community! Running has been there for me through it all though. Aside from taking medication and going back to my therapist, running was the one thing that helped me still feel like me; something I knew I could work at and not fail.
I wish I can say that the PPD is no longer relevant in my life but it unfortunately is. I still feel a disconnect from Ellie at times and have some really bad days and weeks but you know what? It’s all a work in progress and even though some days are worse than others and I’ve hit some very low points, I keep reminding myself that it’s just a bad day, not a bad life; It could always be worse; and continue to try to adapt my favorite running mantra to every day life by trying to “run the mile you’re in”. Hang in there mamas! We are all doing the best we can and you ARE enough!

I’m thankful I had (and have) such a strong support system through my family and friends as well as this very community! Running has been there for me through it all though. Aside from taking medication and going back to my therapist, running was the one thing that helped me still feel like me; something I knew I could work at and not fail. I wish I can say that the PPD is no longer relevant in my life but it unfortunately is. I still feel a disconnect from Ellie at times and have some really bad days and weeks but you know what? It’s all a work in progress and even though some days are worse than others and I’ve hit some very low points, I keep reminding myself that it’s just a bad day, not a bad life; It could always be worse; and continue to try to adapt my favorite running mantra to every day life by trying to “run the mile you’re in”. FINALLY! First day since February 4th I've felt decent and recovered from sickness! I've gotten my motivation, my breathing and energy back! I haven't ran since the 4th and I'm dying to get back! I was wanting so bad to run and I had to leave the IG world for a bit because I was jealous of my followers who able to get runs in! Yeah, know I was sick, but it still sucks! I'm sooooo looking forward to running tonight! :) Eeek! 😆💖

I ran @thecowtown full #marathon for the 2nd time in 2014. I was coming from my first attempt to break 4 hrs in Houston the month before (4:02) So I tried again. I remember seeing my dad around mile 19 and telling him "not today" as I ran past. It was a warmer race day, but I finished in 4:12 which is still my 2nd fastest marathon. My dad (remember, he never wanted to run more than 5k) had finished his 3rd 10k the day before at Cowtown. Nice little ride on the struggle bus this morning. I basically lost all motivation last week and over the weekend. I normally enjoy running on vacation and just couldn’t bring my self to do it while we are in San Diego. I feel like my progress is plateauing and I’m sick of the mill and my normal routes. I wish I could say that every workout is easy but today that was not the case 👋🏽.
Waking up to 30*, my car covered in ice ❄️ and my body freezing to death was not the ideal morning. But instead of consuming my head with negative thoughts, I told myself the faster I get moving, the faster my body will warm up.
5 recovery miles (9:22 Pace) and my body was not having it. I struggled during this run. I lifted for 30 minutes after that but I still wasn’t feeling it. 😐
As I was walking out of the gym, I told my husband that I didn’t get a good workout. He immediately told me that not everyday will be great, that even pro athletes deal with this. He also said tomorrow will be another day. So I’m going to let go off today’s workout and focus on the positive which is actually doing it instead of skipping the workout. ✌🏽
