We know from the Pokedex that Banette is a doll/puppet. It is referred to as both because these words share the same name in Japanese (ningyō). The Pokedex describes the doll becoming possessed after it was thrown away. This information helps us to determine that Banette based on a type of Yokai, meaning a supernatural creature from Japanese folklore. The specific type of Yokai is a Tsukumogami, a forgotten household object that becomes possessed because it was not properly disposed of.
The idea that a poorly discarded doll will come back to haunt its owner is so prevalent in Japan that some cities hold annual doll funerals (Ningyō Kuyo). These ensure that the doll’s soul is respected and granted a proper send off (Fig. 2).
Banette is described to stick pins into its own body to generate energy for laying strong curses. At first glance it seems like this is an obvious reference to Voodoo dolls - although these attributes are actually misconceptions about Voodoo. However, I believe that this characteristic is actually based on a type of Yokai called Wara ningyō (straw doll - Fig. 3). A lot of the misconceptions about how Voodoo dolls are used in dark rituals do actually apply to Wara ningyō: Attaching something from the intended recipient of the curse (i.e. a hair) transforms the doll into a substitute. Pushing long nails through the doll will harm both the doll and the subject.

Star Soldier, 1986, by Hudson Soft
Simply playing through the stages doesn't present enough variety and the hiding mechanic is annoying since it's easy to do accidentally. A pretty enjoyable STG once you realize the fun comes from getting the secret point bonuses.
