Red Sparrow- On recommendation I went to go see this film and now I have another friend who has credible movie taste. I’ll be honest I wasn’t expecting much with Red Sparrow, maybe just another run of the mill spy movie. Thankfully, the film proved me wrong. The plot was well paced, suspenseful, and thankfully has few spy movie cliches. The film is about a young women, who due to unfortunate events, is thrust into the world of espionage working for the Russian government. She is sent on assignment to gain the trust of Joel Edgerton’s Nate. The less you know about the plot the better. Lawrence does a great job and I honestly think this is one of Joel Edgerton’s best roles. I had to chew on the relationship between the two and think about their motivations and possible deceptions. The film also does some interesting things with sex and the power associated with it, and vulnerability. No sex scene was without meaning and sex was used as a deeper metaphor throughout the film. I came out thinking about this film a lot more than I was expecting. I recommend it. 4/5.
