I toasted goodbye to Shreveport with a flight of beer from Red River Brewing Company. The fresh hopped Gyrate IPA stole the show. Red River Brewing is one of only four breweries in Louisiana to brew a fresh hopped IPA. Get yours while it lasts!⠀
I couldn't think of a more perfect last day to my culinary exploration of Shreveport than Louisiana's Food Prize's biscuit demonstration led by nationally-renowned chef and biscuit queen Regina Charboneau.
Lucky Palace is a truly a hidden culinary gem in Shreveport. Some of the best Chinese food I've eaten. Period. From the crispy duck on scallion pancakes to the spicy northern style duck on sticky buns and the ginger jalapeno t-bone, each bite caused a foodgasm. And that doesn't even mention a wine list that can rival anything found in New Orleans or Dallas.
Congratulations to Chef Eleazar Mondragon of Ki' Mexico - winner of the 2017 Louisiana Food Prize Golden Fork Cooking Championship! What a way to wrap up the final night of Louisiana Food Prize. The intensity of the chefs combined with the various aromas wafting from each competing chef's cooking stations was an experience of a lifetime. And the coolest part? Ki' Mexico got its humble start selling salsa at a farmers market!⠀⠀
The Shrimp Buster sandwich from Herby-K's in Shreveport, Louisiana. One of those iconic sandwiches that you have to try at least once in your lifetime. The shrimp are pounded out and then fried, making them more like a shrimp potato chip with that extra layer of crunch, and served with a special Shrimp Buster sauce. They wouldn't share the recipe with me, but there's a mix of tomato and Worcester for the base for sure. It's the way they've been serving shrimp sandwiches since 1936!
I love the old school fish bowl glasses at Herby-K's in Shreveport. They reminded me of college and the amount of times I tried to unsuccessfully "borrow" these from The Pub in Athens, Ohio. And no, I didn't try to "borrow" one from Herby-K's. They would have made my suitcase overweight....
The No. 3 at SALT Shreveport - Peloton de la Muerte Mezcal with muddled lemon and lime, cilantro infused syrup, and a Cabernet float. It's as good as it looks and the perfect way to celebrate my go-kart racing victory from earlier in the day. What's the most exotic cocktail you've tried recently?

This incredible biscuit dish features sweet corn mousse and blueberry conserva constructed by @tristen1117 using @chefregina biscuits.
Some of the best moments and meals are unplanned. We were graciously invited to dine with John-Paul @the.levee @lovingthislifejada had some catfish and John-Paul had a freshly picked harvest of okra and tomatoes. Using what was about I sauteed the okra with garlic, tomatoes, and carrots. Jada assisted me in mixing up a flavorful jerk seasoned chick pea crust for the catfish (which we fried because we're southern). I then cooked up some bacon, seared some scallops, and deglazed the pan with white wine and made an improvised roux of sorts. Quinoa was added and a nice time was had by all. I'm a hardcore biscuit snob and I give my seal of approval to Monika's gluten free organic biscuits. Their cinnamon rolls are serious. Their smoothie bowls are fresh, light, and tasty.
Chef Tom Ramsey is like the ying to Chef Tristen Epps' yang. The two celebrity chefs dazzled Food Prize festival goers with a cooking demonstration that showcased Chef Ramsey's more rustic side of cooking with a traditional Bolognese and Chef Epps' more avant-garde style with a flounder crudo.
Y'all, I had a moment with the #beignets at Marilynn's Place in Shreveport. They weren't the prettiest I've tried, but they rank up there with the tastiest. The fluffy, fluffy layers of flavor! Where's the best beignet you've tried from?
Holy brisket! This Now & Later BBQ potato from Real BBQ and More in Shreveport is bigger than my dang head. Brisket, sausage, beef tips, turkey, and chicken finished off with a smattering of house made mac and cheese.
Ummm.... an organic, gluten free, cold-pressed, vegan breakfast? Who are you and what did you do with Bryan? No bacon and eggs (or Bloody Mary) be damned, breakfast at Well+Fed was off the chain good - like this pumpkin smoothie bowl.
