A scene from the semi-staged concert performance of Wagner's Das Rheingold featuring the Orchestra of Opera North, conducted by Music Director, Richard Farnes, at the Leeds Town Hall. Currently available for viewing online free of charge via the @operavision.eu website. A magnificent production not to be missed! !★★★★★ Martin Kettle, in his review of this production, wrote in "The Guardian" : "For Wagner purists, these Festival Hall performances may be a troubling experience. Not only is the full Wagnerian orchestra right there on the platform, but the stagecraft that is an essential part of the "total artwork" conception is stripped to a bare minimum of gestures and poses. And yet it is rare to encounter such a concentrated and riveting realization of the work as this, with the story explained simply and the words translated on a triptych of atmospherically illustrated video screens behind the orchestra, and without any of the directorial pretension and visual clutter that weighs down so many stagings. This is back-to-basics Wagner, and in many respects it feels like a liberation. Bass-baritone, Michael Druiett, sings the role of Wotan in a magnificent performance of Wagner's Das Rheingold, in this semi-staged production by @operanorth !! This production, along with the remaining three operas in Wagner's Ring Cycle, are currently available for viewing online via the @operavision.eu website: https://operavision.eu/en/library/operas
The Orchestra of Opera North under the baton of Music Director, Richard Farnes, play Wagner's score with great beauty and clarity, and the cast of singers give brilliant performances in their respective roles!
Highly recommended for lovers of Wagner's epic Ring Cycle and for those perhaps coming to it for the very first time....Take the plunge! The water's great! !!!★★★★★ This production will be available for viewing free of charge until mid-April. David: New security code 'David 73694-B'. Voice of 'Mother': Welcome, how may I help you?
David: How about some music, Mother?
Voice of 'Mother': Selection?
David: Richard Wagner - Das Rheingold Act II: The Entry of the Gods into Valhalla.
Voice of 'Mother': Yes, David. As you wish.
Walter: This is colony ship Covenant, reporting. All crew members apart from Daniels and Tennessee tragically perished in a solar flare incident. All colonists in hypersleep remain intact and undisturbed. On course for Origae-6. Hopefully this transmission will reach the network, and be relayed in 1.36 years. This is Walter, signing off. DAY 79: Last day playing #wagner promise hahaha
But this last minute of #alberich curse #aria is really good. The end is so powerful, and as always Wagner avoids resolving it. Instead of B minor, a diminished chord and the Rheingold leitmotif in the right hand.
After that, all carriers of the ring die: Fassolt killed by Fafner, Fafner killed by Siegfried, and Siegfried killed by Hagen, before it returns to the Rhine while Hagen drawns trying to take it himself....
DAY 78: Here we go. Combination with the piano of #alberich curse #aria from #dasrheingold , first page so far.
Was on the road and teaching a lot today, so not a lot of practice time, so at least that.
Come back tomorrow for some more chromaticism :)
Well that was a ride and a half... More than a little bit overwhelmed and frankly bursting with pride to have looked after getting such a storming Das Rheingold onto the @southbankcentre stage last night. (My first as a producer, my 9th I think as a punter...!?)
@londonphilharmonicorchestra musicans were on fire and our gorgeous singers and VJ knocked it out of the park. Too much going on to get pictures, so here is bad post-show photo of the brilliant Matthew Rose, Vladimir Jurowski and Brindley Sherratt (complete with recently stolen ring) looking joyful to commemorate. Bring on Die Walkure...
DAY 77: Decided to start learning some #wagner Arias. Chosen to start with #alberich curse #aria from #dasrheingold since I've been listening a lot to the #ringcycle lately.
It's really fascinating and quite the study in diminished chords lol
So here first, me doing some solfege singing. Quite hard to keep this in tune haha Tomorrow with some piano accompaniment which will probably make it easier to sing.
World of Warcraft, Diablo etc.
This production of "Das Rheingold" has been incredibly rewarding and ridiculously fun. The cast and crew have truly made this something special and anytime getting to do a show with Luke Housner is always a blast. Come hear me sing Fricka January 20th, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 30th @avaopera These beautiful photos were taken by Paul Sirochman Photography. #babysfirstwagner#mezzosoprano#dasrheingold#operalife
