Maximum Overdrive (1986)
Dir: Stephen King
As a mysterious glowing green comet gradually passes by our atmosphere, it triggers a chaotic, and destructive force unlike any on Earth. A truck stop in North Carolina becomes the setting for a gritty face off between man and machine, while the rest of the world devolves into madness. One morning seemingly all the electric machines across the globe begin to act strangely, as if they are possesed by the strange green radiation surrounding the planet. As the body count continues to rise at an alarming rate, the survivors of the massacre must band together to fight against an army of trucks, cars, and heavy duty eighteen wheelers.
Classic 80's nostalgia infused into this mile-a-minute thrill ride, and although it is the only directorial credit to Stephen King's name, he clearly had a vision for the tone, and look of the film. King knows his premise alone is a little silly, and pretty clunky, so he doesn't attempt to make the film too serious. Instead, King creates probably one of the greatest toungue-in-cheek self aware b-movies in history. This is a total cheesefest, and somehow it actually works in the same way 80's over the top action films work. People spew one-liners like crazy, rocket launchers and machine guns show up randomly, a lady has a mental breakdown and over-acts the scene to laughable levels, but honestly... King somehow makes it work. Using a soundtrack that is entirely AC/DC is both a fun touch, and provides some excitement to a few action sequences. While its not the goriest film around, the levels of carnage on screen, car chases, explosions and the humorous touches all elevate this 1980's cheese-horror film into Cult Classic territory.
