Prof. Dr. J. Wochnowski from the University of Applied Sciences in Luebeck payed a visit yesterday to the Kuwait University, being accompanied by head of Cultural Section Horst Blasinger. Promising talks with Asst. Vice Presidents for Research Prof. Haider Behbehani and Prof. Laila Marouf plus Head of Department of Chemistry of Faculty of Science Dr. Saleh Al-Mousawi, evaluating possibilities how to best intensify the mutual cooperation in this field. #q8#q8instagram#kuwait#kuwaitinstagram#kuwaitcity#kuwaiti#الكويت#kuwaituniversity#chemistry#cooperation
Acrylic paints are mostly human-made, composed of pigment and resin. Pigment provides the color. Most contemporary pigments are derived from pure elements, eg. carbon charcoal, cobalt, or created by binding basic compounds. For example, cadmium yellow gets its yellow hue from the inorganic compound cadmium sulfide. Cadmium sulfide crystal structures occur naturally in nature in rare minerals, hawleyite and greenockite, though mostly can also be acquired as an impurity from similar crystal structures of sphalerite, wurtzite and zinc. The resulting synthesis adds chemical bonds to the substance, which produces a brighter color. Acrylics are a liquid because of the resin (or, binder), which is a plastic polymer, made of a monomer and a catalyst that results in the drying part of the paint, while also rendering the dried paint waterproof. Most acrylic paints are non-toxic, though some varieties with concentrations of cobalt, chromium, cadmium, lead and magnesium can be, so read the labels! If you paint, ventilate 🌬
My favourite part about PhD so far is that exploring galleries and museums is considered research. ☺️
It's a great way to get out of the office too. Today I am really trying to narrow in on my research question and how does one do that!? By imagining the problem from the objects point of view. There are so many variables when it comes to the deteriorating effects of VOC emissions on museum objects. So I went to look at all the possible influences in context. I may be getting somewhere...😝Stay tuned.
Almost done for this mural! Will be posting more footages of the production in the next few days... This mural commission is by far the 'toughest" one. It is tougher than my best mural because this time I have to leave my comfort zone and work with elements that I am not very comfortable with. Because my client for this commission, unlike my previous clients, had given me a very specific topic to work with, which can be restricting at times but after doing in-depth research on the topic as well as potential viewers, the topic no long restricts my creative flow. And as always, the positive result of stepping outside one's comfort zone is that you always learn something new. I have always shunned science as far as I could remember. In my mind, science is for those who are highly intelligent and logical, which I am not. But as I grow older I start to see the "science" in every day life. Without science, life would not make much sense and be very boring! This mural is dedicated not only to all the children who go to this tutorial centre for better grades in the scientific subject, but also to those who value knowledge and education. I would also like to dedicated this mural to one of science brightest stars who has passed away recently - Mr. Stephen Hawkings.
Walaupun jawapan akhir betul tetapi konsep yg digunakan tidak tepat ..so,zero mark is given🤦🏼♀️ m1v1=m2v2 is a concept for dilution(pencairan) to prepare standard solution (larutan piawai) not for neutralization🙂 #chemistry
Another day, more pink science. I spent the day testing my vaccine candidates for endotoxin. Endotoxin is a sugar molecule found on the outside of bacteria cells. They're a major signal to our bodies that we've been infected by something, causing our bodies to mount an immune response to them.
The cool part of this test (other than my tiny test tubes) is that we detect its presence using blood harvested from horseshoe crabs in the Atlantic Ocean! Once a year these crabs donate their blood to making vaccines and drugs safe before being released back into the ocean. The really cool part? Horseshoe crabs have blue blood (which through chemical wizardry ends up giving this beautiful pink colour if it detects endotoxin!) #science#instascience#vaccines#biochemistry#chemistry#crab#lablife#horseshoecrab#stem#biology
