An example of how pelvic asymmetry as a result of an unaccounted for leg length difference can refer up the kinetic chain. Quite often riders who don’t sit squarely in the saddle will report numbness or discomfort in one hand, saddle sores on one side or knee pain on one side.
Most people possess some form of asymmetry, it’s really more a question of whether this poses problems for them when they ride a bike.

🔹After hitting the indoor trainer this morning, I figured it would only be appropriate for today’s post to go over which muscles will be feeling sore for the next day or so. 🚴♂️👍
🔹The image above shows the various lower extremity muscles that are active throughout a pedaling cycle. During the downstroke, the Glute Max is the prime mover. The Glutes are the “powerhouse” of the hips, functioning primarily to extend the femur under the pelvis. These are responsible for explosive force production in many compound, leg-dominant movements. As we descend towards the middle and end portions of the downstroke, the quads become dominant by forcefully extending the knee. Finally, at the bottom of the downstroke, the plantarflexors (the calves), push the ball of the foot down to finish off the downstroke. 💪🚴♀️
🔹The beginning of the backstroke involves the Tibialis Anterior, a muscle running along the side of your shin which dorsiflexes the foot. The primary muscle group active throughout the backstroke however, is the Hamstrings, bending the knee and further extending the hip. Finally, as the cycle progresses to the upstroke, the Iliopsoas and Rectus Femoris take over to flex the hip & overcome the peak of the stroke. From here, the cycle begins again with the Glute Max & Quads kicking off the downstroke. ✅
🔹So these are the key muscles involved in each pedal stroke while cycling. In the next post, we will go over some of the best strengthening exercises to address these muscles and maximize your pedaling power. 💪🚴♂️————————————————————————
