Interest piqued by this poetry shitfight about Rebecca Watts “versus” Rupi Kaur, Kate Tempest and Holly McNish. Mainly because, erm, an argument about what kind of poetry is good made the news?! Feels like bad timing for the author that this blew up the same week that Halsey showed the world just how powerful a decidedly populist performance poem could be. Way to be on the wrong side of the moment. Here’s my own dollop of amateurism and ignorance in solidarity. Let’s celebrate the fact that so many more women artists are becoming wildly successful by writing whatever the fuck speaks to their souls in exactly the way they want to write it #poetry#poetryslam#plainlanguage#poetrywars#womensvoices#allvoices#poetryispunk#womenartists#poemsofinstagram

“I will be strong.
Like a woman.
Like a gladiator.”
I have never stood alone. Even at my lowest I have had incredibly strong links in my chain. ...
And I have been the link in others’ chains. ...
We cannot be heroes alone. All heroes have teams. ...
Wonder Woman is a member of a team. Black widow. Jean Grey. Marvel Girl. Jessica Jones
And so many real life heroes.
We are stronger together. We cannot be heroes alone. ...
Why would we want to be?
When you think of leadership qualities, self-awareness is not the first thing that comes to mind. Self-awareness isn’t glamourous, it isn’t one of the traditional executive skills, but it is what characterizes some of the most effective leaders.
Self-awareness is conscious knowledge of your own strengths, weaknesses, beliefs, and motivation. Self-awareness is ALSO an understanding of how you are perceived by others and how your choices impact the community you live in.
If you are reading this and thinking that you could be more self-aware, you are already on the track to getting there. Here are a couple other ways to build self-awareness:
Listen. Listening is not a passive, but rather requires you to be actively attentive and engaged. Pay attention to the message, tone, and body language. Learn to listen to others, and you will learn to listen to your own inner voice. You’ll also learn to have more control over how you come across when you talk with other people. Finally, listening to others will help you understand things form a different perspective. We all have blind spots, so it is helpful to gain different perspective to see a fuller picture of ourselves and our surroundings.
Journal. Writing down your thoughts is a good way to process your emotions and think through challenging situations. The act of writing can be cathartic, or it may be a good way to draft ideas to share with your team. The process or reading your own words back is a great way to step back and objectively evaluate what you are trying to say.
What over-looked qualities do you think are important in a leader?
