JAMES ARMISTEAD (1760-1830) was a slave who worked as a patriot spy during the American Revolution. He served under the Marquis de Lafayette, posing as a British spy and reporting on the movement of British troops back to Lafayette. His information exposed defector Benedict Arnold and was critical to the British defeat at Yorktown, which led to the end of the war. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #Waltham #library

Did you see yesterday’s unveiling of President Barack Obama’s portrait for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery @smithsoniannpg? It was painted by KEHINDE WILEY (b. 1977), a New York City-based contemporary painter known for his portraits of black people in the heroic poses of classical subjects. His most famous work is “Napoleon Leading the Army Over the Alps” (2005), based on Jacque-Louis David’s “Napoleon Crossing the Alps” (1800). As Wiley explained in the unveiling, the portrait of President Obama incorporates flowers from Illinois, Kenya, and Hawaii to symbolize his path; the plants seem to want to overtake Obama, a representation of the struggle between the man and the story. Want to see more? We’ve got one book of his art here in the Teen Room and another on the way! #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #Waltham #library #painting #art #blackexcellence

We had so much fun last night at the Real Talk Black History Month Celebration! We had Black History Jeopardy, Haitian and Algerian and Jamaican food, a Ugandan dance lesson, a performance by Cambridge MC Tawshawn Taylor (SoundCloud.com/TashawnTaylor), and capped it off with some Giant Uno. TOUSSAINT L’OUVERTURE (1743-1803) was the leader of the Haitian Revolution, turning the most prosperous slave colony of the time into the first free colonial society to reject race as grounds for social ranking. He paved the way for the colony to eventually become the sovereign state of Haiti in 1804, but was betrayed and captured by Napoleon’s forces in 1802 and sent to France, where he died in prison. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #Waltham #library #haiti
