#MeetMidd, Andrew Willis: “Growing up in a small town in West Virginia entailed many things, such as learning how to make proper chicken and dumplings, smiling and saying ‘hi’ when walking past a stranger, and graduating with 51 other people, most of whom I had been in school with for my whole life and had never heard of Middlebury. The people there are selfless and principally concerned with the wellbeing of their family and those they care about. Middlebury's size was not too much of an adjustment, but the way of life here is so different. Being physically fit, environmentally conscious, wealthy, and social justice-minded is the exception back home. A college education is rare, and going far from home is even rarer. Growing up there was a constant exercise in meeting people where they are and not expecting someone to change their perspectives right away, no matter how wrong they may have been. This is a skill I hope to develop further, especially because I am so stubborn. I feel so fortunate and grateful for my opportunity to come here, and I hope to one day use the knowledge and skills that I am developing here in order to bring people back home to learn tolerance and acceptance.” - 02/17/18
