"Bison In The Sun" - This was our first day on location, we drove an hour to the airport at 0 dark ass thirty, then we had to take 2 flights, do a 90 minute drive, then check-in at the cabin, store excess gear, breakout camera equipment and get mounted up all with the hopes of getting some golden hour sunset in Yellowstone as a start to our adventure. Going west has some great advantages but leads to some very long days!

Nothing is more nerve wracking than having a shot list of shots you HAVE to get and knowing that the weather controls 50% of them and the animals the other 50% and somehow Murphy and his law is going to pop in for a mysterious 15% extra... We needed backlit shots and the weather forecast told us we had to make it happen this day. We didn't have enough time to get down to a different location so we hustled and found these really nicely backlit Bison. The National Parks have some pretty good rules about how close you can be to animals and one of us was always eyes up - looking, checking, doing mental calculations as to where we needed to be for the shot, but also for our safety. As Richard was the primary shooter on this trip most of that was my job and many times I'd see him just be in the perfect spot when not 10 seconds later I had to let him know it was time to move. As the consummate professional that he is - he never balked or stayed too close, it was all about making the images happen in a safe and respectful manner. Just shooting with someone like that makes the shoot better.

I was able to grab some shots when he was moving and looking out for me and this one really pops with the outline so nicely lit. These Bison are totally at ease with us and a few days later we were stuck in a bison traffic jam where they basically surrounded our vehicle. It was pretty special.
I guess the lesson was sometimes you have to really hustle to get to a moment, do the work, go the 10 steps of planning and still get lucky. I know it was a magical shoot for us, I hope you enjoy L- #naturelover #igdaily #natgeoyourshot #nikonprofessional #bison #silhouette #wildlifeaddicts #nikonnofilter #nikonusa #sunset #americana #upcloseandpersonal #thatswy
