I’ve been hesitant to post this image for a while, despite it being one of my favourites. Photojournalism is meant to capture the essence of a scene, the emotions in the room, and the context of the issue. For me, this picture is out of context. With his hand extended open-palmed, it seems that the subject is a desperate young boy begging. In reality, Pawan, whom I became close with during my time in Pushkar for his boundless good temper and affection, was merely holding out his hand for me to pick him up. No begging. No tears. I’m happy to share that, thanks to @sonapushkarproject, Pawan is now going to school at age 3.
Sunset over George Town from the Clan Jetties.
Billed as one of the last bastions of old Chinese settlements on the island, this waterfront society is home to houses on stilts of various Chinese clans. These water villages are over a century old. Each of the six remaining jetties is named after a Chinese clan.
